I always park in Neutral, Since the bike can be started in gear I have this fear of starting her up and my ride leaving without me. With the stretch and big ole 300 tire it will probably cruise for a few miles before it tips!

I always park my K-9 in neutral...I made the mistake of looking uncool with a start in gear...:bang: one thing to add I carry a side stand support thingy (plastic HD part).. you know the thing that you put under the stand when parked... one because it keeps the chrome stand from getting beat up and keeps my bike from falling.. (the stand sinking into the surface).. Seen a Chopper on it's side that fell on 2 other bikes while parked on a Toy's for tots run...because the bike sank into the pavement.....anybody else seen / heard of this happening?.....

On hot days, yes. I carry a crushed aluminum can on high heat days to stick under the stand.

Last year after leaving mine in gear, several people came running inside the restaurant to tell me my motorcycle war running all by itself!(now on its side of course). Minor damage, but real embarrassing as it just laid there and kept cranking. Had to disconnect the battery to get it to stop.

Seriously? I have never heard of that happening. I will have to start being more careful then. I usually park it in neutral unless on a hill but I don't make a big deal out of it. I always figured the reason for the neutral parking was to keep it from jumping or taking off when started, not because the bike mysteriously starts and drives of alone.

Yeah hot days on asphalt that kick stand will sink and dawg go boom.

Sounds like that dawg broke the leash and took off with its master anywhere close.:whoop:

My bike is extremely hard to put into neutral when it's running. After I kill the engine it's no problem get it into neutral. Anyone know what's up with that?

Slick Rick,

Ya my 03 Mastiff is hard to put into neutral too.
I found if I give it a little throttle a bit it will go into neutral easier when running.
Also I have to roll the bike forward a bit when engine is off to get neutral to kick in.

Good Luck,

Makes no matter to me, but in gear on a hill - but I have never parked at a bar with a hill in the parking lot. I ALWAYS start the bike with the clutch pulled in anyways - my good habit, plus it helps get oil between the plates for seperation before kickin it into gear.

Another good reason for this site. I had no idea they would attempt to start by themselves. If it can happen, it will happen to me.

Yep, I carry a small square of aluminum.

I'm on a quest to find a kickstand that is ~ 7/8" longer than the stock part, which is too damshort.

Or you can just try to put a wedge under the mount..

My BDM came with one under the stock kickstand... so I re-used it on my Ness kickstand... its under there but can't see it too well

But makes a good lean.

kick habit

I park in neutral in my garage and shut the gas off. If I don't, the whole house will smell like gas! Usually leave gas on and park in gear but not always. Never had heard of ghosts trying to hotwire bikes! Gonna break that habit! Oh, and I put the kickstand down with my hand. Can't reach it with my heal 'cause it's tucked too far under the primary. I guess it should be a HANDstand instead of a KICKstand!
