pleased for you Jake - so it was decided your mate was at fault then?
Not officially but, the way it works is that I had his insurance guy come and have a look at the bike and take pictures of the bike and make an estimate of the damages. That way once fault is determined, they can just write me a check for the amount of the damages.

I don't think there is ANY way at all that it could be found to be my fault in this.

I just didn't want to do anything to the bike before they came to look at it and, I wasn't going to ride it with only one bag on it with the blinker bar hanging off it. haha

It was pretty funny really because the adjuster came to my house on an ultra classic that he's sunk a fortune into. He sympathized with my situation to say the least and, anything that was even touched he gave me a new one on the estimate. ( the bag never completely detached and never hit the road )

There was a slightly larger hole where the blinker bar attached to the fender and, he gave me a new fender. The bag could be repaired but, he gave me a new one. etc.

I BLEW MY MAINSHAFT TOO! THEY TOLD ME I WAS ONE OF THE FIRST ONES.

I NO LONGER WORRY ABOUT THE RELIABILITY PROBLEMS. THE MANUFACTURER (BDM), BOUGHT MY BIKE BACK.

count em folks. That makes 8 mainshafts that have broken that we know of just on this forum.....

Big Dog has been pretty good about fixing most stuff that is their issue but, I was kind of left out in the cold on this one.

Woolf I know you are pissed about your bike and I would be as well, but 8 mainshaft failures out of two websites and however many members is not a huge failure rate at this point. Time will tell though.

well, there is only one website at this point and, I'm sure there are others that haven't chimed in yet.

I'd say 8 of the same part is a big deal on a motorcycle with 12,000 miles.

also, I hope nobody has their tire lock up when this happens going down the freeway.

The numbers are this... 687 members here. 8 broken shafts makes up 1.1%

Not saying anything just stating the facts.

I personally don't care what the numbers are. The point is, that there has to be some connection to it all and as long as BDM steps up and takes care of it... no worries.

I think an assumption is being made that all 600+ members have read the thread though.

I think there are a lot more out there that have broken and, there are going to be a lot more that do break.

I'm really glad we have this forum to talk about these things.

Also, not all transmissions are the same so, of the ones that are affected, I'd like to know those numbers too. Like Sul said, It's now the BDM balanced drive system. I'm sure that one is different than mine is. There are more than likely a lot of transmissions that do not have the suspect part too, I'm sure. I'd bet a lot of the older bikes don't have this part.

I just don't think the fucking MAIN shaft in the tranny should EVER break. Much less in a bike with about 10,000 miles. At least as long as it has oil in th e tranny. But, we don't have just one breaking.... We have a lot breaking. All the same part.

Anyway, that's just my opinion.

Maybe this question has been asked, but were there any warning signs before these tranny's went out??
MY TWO MAINSHAFT BREAKS WERE QUICK AN EASY JUST LIKE ONE SECOND YOUR PULLING THE NEXT THING I KNEW I WAS FREEWHEELING NO SIGN ANYTHING WAS WRONG

I did rebuild trannies at a GM shop for a few years. I did see some mainshaft problems in a couple applications. It was pretty rare though. It was always the same trannies and years. Sometimes you just get a bad batch of castings. I bet that is the case here. Someone needs to get a photo of the problem.

I wonder what the possibility of the rear wheel locking when one breaks?

I was going about 75mph when it happened to me. The motor lugged, I reached for the clutch, no clutch. The bike was braking on it's own the motor killed when it slowed enough.

I was lucky I wasn't in a 75mph skid.

The more I think about it, the more upset I get. I'm glad there hasn't seemed to be anyone that has had that happen to them. ( yet )

Were the folks that have the main shaft break, done any major mods such as heavy engine work? Or all of these pretty much stock and been occuring without any excessive wear from like doing burn-outs are trying to pop wheelies for example. Also how many that have had one break had used tranny oil other than the recommended stock type such as using Redline Shock Proof?

8 on this forum does seem pretty high considering all the numbers and many of those numbers being bikes with non appilcable equipment, but at this point it does seem to be a very small precentage overall.

Hopefully those that have experience such, get them fixed at minimal cost very soon and never had such a problem again and no others have a breakage.

Still would be interesting more than anything if the ones that had one break, what type of oil they were using.

Thanks and lets all hope that we do not have one fail or worse lock up!!!

Fibersnake You correct here on the burnouts, increased torq. How many main shafts have we seen with a hole drilled thur it? Stress risers can form inside the shaft then travel up to the splines,This takes a good failure analysis person to decide what failed. How many of you guys torg the clutch hub on with an impact instead of locking up the two gears then applying the correct torq? Same thing applies to using red lock tite and heating up the nut. Then reinstalling the old nut,We don't know what type of failure we have till we see the main shaft and all the bad parts. There was a service bul out that apply-ed to my 05 chopper about a screw backing out only thing i saw. I'm not a real fan of red lock tite either. It has its place use sparingly. 05chop
