Will be interesting to see some of the specifics from those that have had one fail for sure. Jwolf seems to be pretty standard and based on his, nothing that would indicate some way out of line.
On the oil, I know many use the Redline Shock Proof in the tranny, and it does not seem to be a problem, however in my O & M it specifically states that "Harley synthetic lubricants is NOT recommended for use in Big Dog Motorcycles transmissions."
Now what does that mean and how it actually applies in the real world, I have no clue. Do BD mean Harley synthetics or all synthetics?
That said, I use the regular Rev-Tech, but I change it out about ever 5000 miles. Have not had no issues, shifting or otherwise. Doesn't mean it is any better or worse than Shock Proof, but one of my concerns with the Shock Proof is that it is very thick and many would think that being so is better.
My thought is that it may be too thick and when it is up to normal temps or trying to get there, due to higher viscosity, it may not flow that well and actually create more stress on the tranny. Have seen one tranny taken apart that was using Shock Proof and the stuff was so thick and adheared to the internal, that it took quite of bit of deep cleaning to get off the componets. Do not know if this is good or not, but of some concern to me-so I stay away from it.
Just curious of how many that have had tranny failure may have had the Red Line Shock Proof or other synthetics in their units, if any.
