BLOWN TRANS ?????

Piece of cake Lee!

Can the bike shift when it isn't running?

IF you raise the shifter does it return to it's normal position or does it flop?

If it flops your shifter pawl spring could be broke...it happens!

You have to be able to get the bike into third gear to do this adjustment.

Put the bike in third gear and disconnect the shift rod from the lever on the tranny.

Move the lever fore and aft and you should feel equal movement and spring tension going either way (you may feel a bit of freeplay before feeling any spring pressure but it should feel the same both ways).

Just forward and below of the shift arm you'll seen a nut with a threaded shaft sticking out of it. This is the shifter pawl adjuster. It has an allen head on it so you'll need an allen wrench (may have to shorten it a bit if clearance is a problem...I don't remember off the top of my head what size it is I'm thinking 1/4" but could be wrong)

loosen the nut and rotate the adjuster either way until the adjsutment feels the same both waysYou shouldn't have to go more than about 1/2 a turn either way. when all feels good, tighten the nut and reattach the shift rod.
Thanks Vet - great info again :2thumbs:

BEYOND THE PALE
My tech guy called and said the sled was done, warped clutch plates was the diagnosis. I will take a picture of them tomorrow and post them on here if anyone is interested. He told me the clutch plates on the 04's were pretty much bulletproof and doesn't really have an answer on why they are warped. Maybe it was that 150 mile trip in 27 degree weather? Any suggestions on why they were warped, let me know!!!!!!

i disagree.

they are built by baker at bdm specs. different trap door, trans bolt down pattern, gearing, etc

i bet the primary isnt even baker on the newer bikes.

its called the "bdm balanced drive system"
The trannys used by BDM are built by Baker. the shafts and gears are sourced by Baker. Like everybody else these days, parts are sourced by the cheapest vendor (Baker used to use Andrews gears and shafts exclusively, now I'll bet they are made off-shore)

Cases come from Baker, castings may be different so that the case says BDM on it or "balanced drive", but it's still a DSSC set up minus all of the billet crap.

So if the drive train is designed for a certain amount of power and you go putting big cams, head work, pipes, carbs, and even NOS, is it BDM or Bakers fault that something broke.

How many of these broken bikes are still in stock configuration?....Oh yeah, you guys want BDM to stand behind their product even if the mods you make would knowingly void your warranty!

I just have a carb and pipes on mine. If that's enough to break a mainshaft, I'd say that the mainshaft is not worth shit.

Not sure if this is a tranny problem maybe you guys can help. Had a minor spill in December and decided to change color scheme(bike was totally broke down motor and all). Long story short bike was in shop for 3 1/2 months mainly due to parts missing during re-assembly that had to be ordered. I recieved bike Fri. ran fine 10mi.. to the house. Sunday I woke up early washed the wife's suv and detailed the bike. I rode about 5 mi to the quaters to meet a few friends for a Sunday ride. After being parked for 30mins I started the bike and shifted to 1st gear and nothing. I tried all gears and the bike did not respond. Next I turned the bike off and inspected for anything leaking or broken and found nothing. When I tried to re-start it sounds like a spinning noise(a high pitch zzzzzzzzz). Maybe bad starter but that would not explain why the bike was running in 1st gear but did not respond.
I figure something was done incorrectly during re-assembly and I hoping it is minor. Any input appreciated:bang:

Transmission Blown Up; Broken Mainshaft

Big Dog Motorcycles have inherant problems. If you notice, every one seems to have similar issues. If you haven't had the issue, don't worry, you will. I encountered just about every thing mentioned on this site.

Guess what?

Big Dog bought my bike back & forbid me to discuss the details of the deal.

Franky Bones,

I have not had the issues and though I may, many here have not. Sorry to hear that you had so many but I take it work out for you.

Guess what Franky...every manufacturer suffers from the same fate. When I worked on cars...I could diagnose them before they came in fromt he parking lot. I think you are exaggerating a little. I still don't think the tranny thing is a plagued problem. All and all big dogs are pretty reliable and priced well. Try and build one on this level. I bet you can't do it cheaper.

I haven't had any problems yet and i have a friend with a 99 big dog with a 107 and he hasn't had any problems. I agree there can be but with 29000 bikes sold it seems they are pretty reliable

You can add me to the list of owners who has had this issue. Big Dog is taking care of the repair, and I will have to cover the shipping to the factory. Then again I pulled my own trany out and they stated because I did that they would not pay to put it back in. Fine with me as I really don't care for the service center here.

Hello Everyone...I'm new here, I was intesested in this because yesterday 6/17. I was on the freeway cruising around 65mph...went to pass, pulled in the clutch and felt like the cable broke..but, the tranny went limp...engine revs as if in neutral...I was able to coast to the shoulder and put bike in neutral(green N)...cluth cable has slack but tranny will not engage...needles to say flat bed to the shop...

6950 miles... 07 chopper...wtf

Tell me what you think. we are crusing at 60, with out warning the bike goes in netural, the clutch handle gets loose, with no pressure and the trans will not lock into any gear. broke shaft in trans or what...
Does anyone know what happend with "Skully"? Did his problem get resolved? This started a few months ago...He left me hanging, I spent 30 mins reading the posts and no resolution... Hows the tranny now? I have my bike at the shop waiting for a tech to look at it. So I dont even know what my tranny problem is...But, this is EXACTLY how my bike went down too.

Looks like we're up to 13 blown mainshafts then but, we'll wait to see for sure.

If you lost power and your clutch acted like you broke a cable then, that's probably what it is.

I think it's the mainshaft issue. It's the same symptoms as everyone else has had. Mine was a bit different because my motor lugged. Mine wasn't acting like it was in neutral when it broke but, I didn't have power to the ground either.

Anyway, all the other symptoms were the same.

That's like 13 mainshafts now that we've counted on the board in just a few months of counting them.
