I had a transy problem today while driving back from the new dealer in Maple Shade, NJ (didn't know they were there until I read their intro on this site). They just did the fender strut recall on my 2005 chopper (nice folks). I was doing about 70 in 6th gear, slowed due to merging traffid, downshifted to 5th and next thing I know it kicks out of gear (no neutral light, just NO GEAR or any gear beside 6th). I upshifted back to 6th and was able to get home in 6th gear (went through lights after I got off rt295 and never slowed down). I got into the driveway and tried shifting again. Nothing at all, not even neutral. I called the dealer they're going to come and get it. I'll let you know what it is after they tell me the problem, but I bet it's the same issue you guys have had. Bad fucking news, and it happen just when the weather's getting warm.
Doubt the shaft broke if ya still have 6th, probably a shift fork or adjustment…

the main symptom is that your clutch is gone too. Clutch handle just goes to the handle bars and no spring.

did that happen?

Thanks, make me feel a little better. I hope it's nothing major since it looks like some of the guys have had some real problems with trans parts from BDM.

Sorry, I didn't read your last question. No, my clutch is fine.

yeah, I just got my bike back from having the blown mainshaft myself. got it back last week. The bad news is that if they have to pull the tranny, it's about 6-8hrs of labor and, if they have to send off the tranny to BDM to get it fixed, you're down for a month minimum.

I know, I've been reading the thread and your story is a nightmare.

Hopefully, it will be something they can resolve locally. If they have to pull the tranny, they'll send it back to Baker via BDM for repair. ( which will take a LONG time )

After all the crap I've been put through with my bike since Sept. and this happened right after I got it back.... I was PISSED.

I still got to pay $1,105.00 for the fucking bill. ( and be without the bike yet ANOTHER almost 5 weeks )

I guess you guys can tell I'm still a little bitter.....

Jwoolf, It may be better to sell it now while it works, get some decent bucks for it, and get the more reliable 2006-2008 bikes. Lotta great deals out there right now. Just a thought.
The BDM's are great looking bikes on the road. However, after reading threads like this one makes me wonder about going out and slapping down
30k+ for a BDM.

Don't take it the wrong way I love the way these bikes look and have been hooked ever "since" sitting on one.

As of today 4-15-08 I will be joining the BDM (Broke-Down-Motorcycle) club. My tech was sliding the shifter bar and tranny shaft was loose, he said it was moving way too much (couldn't find neutral, couldn't shift from first to second with my foot). I'm sure that my shaft is broken also. A 2004 with 15000 miles and it's had almost that many miles on a trailer going to the shop. I baby my bike and this pisses me off to no end. After this it might be time to turn it in!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

haven't heard of many tranny problems with the 04 and earlier stuff (that was when Baker was using Andrews components. Anybody been in your tranny before?

Not real sure of your terminology, I don't recall ever seeing a broken shaft (although I have seen a few bent ones but they were caused by issues outside the transmission).

What exactly are you talking about with "shifter bar" and "tranny shaft"

There are actually 4 shafts in that transmission:
Main shaft
Countershaft
Shift fork shaft
6th gear shift fork stub shaft

has the shofter pawl adjsutment ever been checked on your bike?

is that easy to do?
Piece of cake Lee!

Can the bike shift when it isn't running?

IF you raise the shifter does it return to it's normal position or does it flop?

If it flops your shifter pawl spring could be broke...it happens!

You have to be able to get the bike into third gear to do this adjustment.

Put the bike in third gear and disconnect the shift rod from the lever on the tranny.

Move the lever fore and aft and you should feel equal movement and spring tension going either way (you may feel a bit of freeplay before feeling any spring pressure but it should feel the same both ways).

Just forward and below of the shift arm you'll seen a nut with a threaded shaft sticking out of it. This is the shifter pawl adjuster. It has an allen head on it so you'll need an allen wrench (may have to shorten it a bit if clearance is a problem...I don't remember off the top of my head what size it is I'm thinking 1/4" but could be wrong)

loosen the nut and rotate the adjuster either way until the adjsutment feels the same both waysYou shouldn't have to go more than about 1/2 a turn either way. when all feels good, tighten the nut and reattach the shift rod.

The bike shifts when it's NOT running. Bought it new and no one has been in the tranny, matter of fact it has had the same mechanic since new. His statement was that on the main tranny shaft had too much play. In other words instead of the main shaft rolling straight back then forward, it moves too freely as in more of a circle motion. Dropped it off Tuesday and still haven't heard anything and will post something the minute I hear something from him!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Tell me what you think. we are crusing at 60, with out warning the bike goes in netural, the clutch handle gets loose, with no pressure and the trans will not lock into any gear. broke shaft in trans or what...
What bike did this happen to??? Just curious as to what year model it was?
