Ok, so I'm at work and I'm in an artistic mood so I made a drawing just for you. This is how you test for spark. It is IMPERATIVE that the threads of the spark plug be GROUNDED on some metal part of your bike. This means that with the ignition "ON", have a helper press "RUN" on the handlebars, and hold "START" while you hold the threads of the plug against the engine fins. If the plug is not grounded, it will not spark. Once again, if you leave the plug holes open, watch your face because lots of air will come blasting out while you do this, or use a spare plug and leave the originals in like Gas said. Watch closely, the spark can be hard to see if its bright, turning the lights down will help.

If you really have no spark, check to make sure you have 12v at the coil when run is pressed. If you do, it could be a bad coil. If you don't, the next thing I would try is open the timing cover and make sure you have 12v to the timing pickup, when the ignition is on and the run button is pressed. If you don't, you can check your EHC, towards the left side you will have a little light that comes on when you press the "run" button. If you do have 12v at the timing pickup, chances are it's fried. I've burned 2 since I had my bike. Once all those things are checked and verified, I'd start looking at the EHC.
Great post.....
Moe not only gave us a good picture but covered the possible problems well. if you chk spark and verify the proper powers you should find your problem... The only thing i would add is that if you haven't already replaced the plugs ..... Replace them.. .a simple low cost maintenance procedure... :2thumbs: Keep us informed..

Hey Gas, the 2004 bikes do not have a stand alone, cam cover mounted ignition. My 2004 just had a block off plate behind the ignition cover, and it had a Thunderheart ignition under the seat.
Good call Jake.... that's right. The cam pick up in the nose cone, and ignition under the seat...

Mo... great drawing... but you can also just put the grounding tip on the head... that will do the trick. It doesn't have to be the threads..

Let me gracously correct Moe on one item he mis-stated on his Great Work of Art.
He says to look out for air that will come blasting up from the spark plug hole! LOL It won't be air...it'll be air/gas mixture!
The reason i know this is i had an air head one time come up on my bike. Well she was the presidents old lady. When she figured out I was checking fire she comes up and puts her head down by my plug and says ok fire it off...LMAO Well I wasn't thinking and I fired it off. Well she put out this blood curdling yell as she started to cuss. Her eyes were sprayed with gasoline and everybody was mad at me for a while...LOL So watch them empty spark plug holes and those guys that are learning to wrench!

Great pic Moe!

And that is why I say get a new set of plugs... keep the plug hole closed...
