I have a 2004 BigDog Mastiff.Currently the bike has 2,497 miles. The issue Im having is the bike seems not to fire when trying to start! Its done this before..So I elected to take it to a BD dealer locally and they had advised me the fuel petcock was bad. Then the so called mechanic said my bike was out of GAS..Duhh...With a 1/2 tank of gas!!Dont think so.I returned home with my bike and removed fuel lines and opened both sides of valve on/res.The gas flows like Niagra Falls.Just curious if anyone out there has ahd same problem.A friend with a older model had suggested that the BRAIN or ECH was going bad.Any info would be greatly appreciated. Thanks All for allowing the WOODDAWG to join the GROUP.

just because the fuel is getting through the petcock doesn't necessarily mean its getting to the carb - take the air cleaner cover off and twist the throttle and you should be able to see. Also check for spark.

Welcome. On my 04 bulldog, when my EHC went out, it would not crank at all. You may want to clean the petcock filter by removing it. Also clean carb for dirt. Do a search on here and you will find lots of info.

Does the LED light up on the ignition mod. when you hit the run button? Or does it blink while you are turning over the engine? I've had ign. mods. act intermitant on the older models.

Check to make sure you have a spark. Take out BOTH plugs, but leave one plug attached to the wire. Touch the threads of the plug to the engine fin, and have someone crank the engine. Watch your face because air will blast out of the open plug holes. Watch the electrode on the plug, it should be sparking. If not, the problem is there. Might be the timing pickup.

I saw this thread in introductions too, but figured it'd be better to post again here for the archives.

Wooddawg,
I closed your other thread in the intro section to keep it simple.

As for your problem, did you check to ensure you have fuel at the carb? I had a similar problem on my Mastiff and found out that my tank was pressure locking. When I popped my gas caps, it sounded like opening a carbonated beverage...:D

Good luck and WELCOME!

I got an auto glass fuel filter and placed it just a couple of inches before the carberator so I could see if gas was getting that far; vapor lock; general crap; etc. My money says it will end up being your good ol' EHC (thanks again to Big Dog, in advance, for their contribution to further fucking up my already fucked up life, as well as others....also, an honorable mention for coming in a close second, to my wonderful x-wife). Good luck

Big Wrist Need More Twist

As you guys know I have an 04 Mastiff.A few mos. ago I had taken it to a BD dealer in Gboro NC to have a 500 mile service done.Prior to service this pup hauled some major ass, much to my surprise when the bike was serviced and rode again it felt as if the old DoG had lost some BALLS.At the time the bike was still under warranty..just curious as to if anyone has any ideas as to what the mechanic could have altered to make my pup put its head up its ass?Feels like it lost some major power...Very curious as to what could have been done due to warranty and what can I check or change to get that super twist back??Also outside of headers and carb what are some reasonable upgrades that I can make without compromising streetability.

If the bike is cranking, but not firing, it can only be no fuel, or no spark. Considering your carb is full of gas, I'd say no spark. Check that, and start troubleshooting from there.

Could of messed up your carb adjustments. I had the same issue when I let the dealer service my bike. I reset the carb myself and no more issues except for my back tire gets slicker every time I ride. Don't have a clue what could be causing that    :2thumbs: :2thumbs: :2thumbs:

Where has that old 04 been for the last 5 years????? 500 miles...... Get that thing broke in will ya! :whoop:

They probably messed with the carb adjustments. I've posted on here many a times to ensure where you carb settings are prior to taking it for service so you can set them back to where they were if the dealership messed them up.

Yell if you need more help,

Stay away from the open glass filters... they are bad. If you want a filter get a pingle. But don't do anything till you get this figured out.

Does it start with the gas cap off the bike? If so could be the check vlv in the cap. Remove it.

Pull your cam cover/nose and see if your ignition is getting power from the EHC. Also it should blink when cranking the motor with the starter

Then if it is check power to the coil as well.

Further, a tip when checking for spark... use a seperate spark plug instead of the one in the motor. Saves you from getting blasted in the face with air/fuel.

Had same problem. Plug wire was arcing where it plugs into the coil and was loaded with carbon. Cleaned it up, opened up teh end of the plug wire to get a better contact. No problems since then.
