Starter leaking oil

Thanks to Eric at HDM holding my hand, I am becoming a novice gear head. I have the primary completely apart and I am replacing the bearing carrier, the pressure plate as well as a rebuilt starter and a clutch basket. Ring gear teeth were damaged and starter gear was completely stripped. I have the new starter back in, all the grounds are reconnected, and waiting for the shop to press on the new bearing carrier.

no installation goes perfectly however and when installing the rear screws for the battery tray they went in part way and just started spinning. No real torque was used, but now I can’t get them in or out. I can feel the rubber under the lip of the frame rotate. This is tough as there is no room between the rear fender and where the screw goes through to get a wrench in there To put a nut on the back side. Any thoughts out there about how to solve this problem?

here are some pics of the starter and ring gear teeth

Any one know what the rear mounting screws on the battery housing for an 06 Mastiff screw into. Is it the frame or are there nuts welded under neath? I can feel some rubber sleeves on the underside of the frame but can’t feel anything else. Before I cut those bolts out I need to figure out whar is underneath. Thanks in advance.

Ok figured this one out. The two bolts that hold the rear of the battery housing screw into well nuts. All I had to do was push them out and get some new ones. A little slow here but learning. I will blame COVID. That is my story and I am sticking to it. :)

Update on installing a new ring gear And starter. With a few hiccups and great advice from Eric, I have it all back together with a new ring gear, new pressure plate, new bearing carrier and rebuilt starter. I got COVID twice so slowed me down an bit. A big shout out to Eric for his superior advice And the availability of parts. A great operation up in Kansas. Thanks to all of you for advice and help. This forum makes the wrenching fun. Putting in a new DEKA and primary fluid in the next couple of days. Then the real test. Any recommendations on primary fluid. Planning 24 oz since everything is completely dry. is there a preferred brand of fluid And is this the correct amount?

Since you had the primary cover off 24oz is what WSW recommends and 20oz if just drained for maintenance. I use Harley primary fluid but I'm sure you will get several other recommendations that work well also.
Don't forget to clean or replace the primary vent.

Good Job Paul! I agree 100%that Eric is awesome in supplying parts & knowledge. Keep us posted when you get rubber to pavement. I use Lucas (non-synthetic)chain case oil in the orange chopper. 9E91FD21-0B74-4549-AB00-4734B7D309C9.jpeg
