Starter leaking oil

I need some guidance. New billet nose starter from HDM. It is weeping. I am sure my mechanic who had to repair the primary cover, previous owner stripped one of the mounting bolts, put 32 oz of oil back in the primary. I will drain and replace the oil with 20 oz.

Do I need to pull the starter and clean it up, or can I run it until the next time I have the service done? I don’t have a 1000 miles on it but I have a very slow drip.

I also have a spare stock starter that needs a rebuild. Can some one do that?

I have disparaged my mechanic, so my apologies Dan. I talked with him this morning and he had called both Big Dog and Baker and got the same advice, 20 oz for the primary. That is what I am running so not sure why the starter is weeping.

Any suggestions?

Well the saga continues. The starter just spins and won’t engage. I am afraid either the starter or the ring gear is stripped. Battery is good. Starter is still weeping primary fluid. Lesson learned ( no one say DUH !! please). If the starter is weeping oil and intermittently grinds on a start, don’t start the bike, fix it. Never pulled a starter before but there is a first time for everything. This is a new starter with the billet head. Mechanic installed. Any suggestions?

Drop the primary cover & take a look. Sounds like you need to replace the jack shaft assembly

Shit. That doesn’t sound good or easy.
Thanks. On the rack the phantom goes.
Actually it’s pretty easy. Theres a seal on the inner primary cover that might be bad which I would think might let primary oil into the starter. Just a thought

Your symptom sounds like a drive clutch.

Your primary vent may need replacing for that drip from the starter.

Give HDM a call first about your problems then order what they suggest. Good Luck

first disconnect the battery ! and pull the starter out , test it on the bench and check for cracks , on my 07 Mastiff the starter had a crack in the housing and the oil was coming through , I couldn’t see the crack in the starter until I pull the it out.. stay safe

Watched the video, I’m not sold at all on the billet nose.

Only real difference is removing the oil grove which is not a real advantage IMO.

Keeping the oil out, lowering to 20-24 oz is the key and also, rebuilding/ replacing the seals in the starter.

Ok starter gear and wring gear are both chewed up. Erik kindly offered to rebuild the starter. Call in to Baker on getting a wring gear or the basket. Biggest problem I have : Any one know where the ground wire coming off the negative terminal of the battery terminates. I have a ground wire from the battery to the starter but I have a much longer wire that doesn’t appear to be terminated anywhere I can find. Both are the same gauge. , ( yes I took it off to get the starter out, yes I didn’t take a pic of that removal and yes I admit to my stupidity. Just thought I would get that over with). On an 06 Mastiff, the manual says it terminates on the transmission. Damned if I can find that point. I was told there should be only one ground wire terminating at the starter on the mounting bolt. I know my old mechanic told me that due to heat damage on the old wire terminals they added a second ground. I would ask him but his cancer has him tied up for a bit.

Short version. 06 Mastiff main ground where does it terminate? Battery to where? Can’t find it in the manuals. Does it terminate at the starter mounting bolt or the transmission. Second question, if you add a second ground where is the best place to terminate it. Jersey Mike and I both believe at the starter mounting bolt but this wire is too long and was terminated somewhere else. Any ideas ?

You sure it’s not your neutral switch wire?

There is one going to a bolt under the seat, but it’s probably only a 10 gage, not the same as the main cable that grounds to starter

Hey Paul, I have a main ground that connects to the underneath of my transmission on my 2000. It actually is the only bolt on the backside of the inner primary. I could find nothing about this ground connection until I took the inner primary off. Just a thought you may have one down there to.
