Just to let ya know I feel a little better now after reading Blitz's " We spoke and Big Dog Listened Thread" and after slamming a beer, but I'll wait to conclude after my experience with Full Throttle.:rant2:

Here is a bit of an email sent to me by Big Dog this morning on the VR recall:-

"The voltage regulator no longer has to be replaced; we will add a circuit protection kit to your bike (if it has one of the voltage regulators affected by the recall. The new remedy is now posted on the NHTSA web sit."

I don't think judging by the rest of their email they will help me anyway - thought it might be useful for some of you to see this though - when they say "we will add" does this mean they need the bike? who knows?

Talked to BDM yesterday afternoon on this. At that time there was some confusion as to whether or not you actually needed to replace the VR or use the wiring solution. I'll know more on Monday

So with all that said sounds like the circuit breaker will protect you "if" the VR fails. If so will BD still replace the faulity VRs when they fail?

Confirmed with a local GM at BDM that they are going the circuit protection route, but they still don't have all the information. I'm going for additional information this afternoon.

Well - now that all of you have been waiting months for the elusive new voltage regulators from BD ( and the HD parts won't work - they're only 32amp) they've gone and changed the fix. :bang: Evidently the VR isn't the source of the issue, the circuit breaker is. We did a repair on what I know to be the first bike to suffer the fire  from the failure... and a few since. We're looking at installing a new circuit breaker now - luckilly there are plenty available... almost. All us dealers get 10 at a time. We're supposed to recive 10 kits on the 7th of December, as are many dealers. Thanks to Raywood :2thumbs: for giving me a call about this so I could straighten it all out with Big Dog. Now... I'm off to have a Guiness or 3 - have a great weekend!
Thanks Dirtgirl, and welcome to the site. For everyone's info this girl is responsible for all the warranty issues at the only dealer in Washington State.
So P8RIOT, Knotso, HDLarry and a bunch of other have a very good repore with her.

Never did believe the VR was the problem. I have had a complete meltdown that resulted in the earlier recall and in the little pigtail wire they put in the ignition wire. Now seems they have figured it out again and the fix is a CB this time.

Later,
Ray

Now I'm wondering if this is a problem for other years/models...? Maybe they'll expand the recall - or, if they narrow it down to a different component (CB), maybe even shrink the affected population.

Order mine a month or so ago. Took the dog in for grooming (bad chrome) and they said they have the VR installed and ready to pick yesterday. Will pick it Friday. Let you all know the results

I had a dealer tell me this week it was going to be a fuse instead of a circuit breaker! I don't like that idea to much unless they give away stash tubes to carry spare fuses in:loony:

And hey to dirt girl

Yepper ... told the same thing yesterday when I was picking up a VR for a forum member. Basically its a "splice with a fuse" in it. They're not for sale yet, only warranty / recall replacement.

Plastic short stop rated at 40 amps? Is this where bdm thinks there problem starts here?I would have to agree on a better protection. some where it was posted that the v/r warped from too much heat now there going to a fuse.Im still going to replace my regulator and short stop cheap insurance

Ok guys got the dog back yesterday and same VR they just added an inline 40amp fuse. Thats the fix now. This should protect the electrical system but doesn't fix the problem. Has anyone heard if that it the VR fails anyway will they replace it?

PS. Thumbs up for Extreme Power Sports in Columbus GA.
