Running with the Enrichment On

When I start the BD I have to leave the enrichment lever up just a little bit to keep the BD from coughing and popping out the carb. Don't matter how warm the BD is. If I close the enrichment all the way I can't even take off. It hesitates and just kind of putts. Now the way I see it is running lean? Above 2000 rpms it runs great. Now I don't know what # jets I have yet. I have not dropped the bottom of the bowl. I guess I just want a second opinion on do you think its a lean mixture at low speeds. The plugs that were in the BD were pretty black. I installed new ones for the up coming riding season. I have not taken them out to look at them yet. One more thing I bought the BD from Texas. I had it shipped to Ohio. Do you thing that could be part of the problem also? Today was the first day I really was able to put any miles on it. The weather has been bad. So what should I do first? Thanks for any and all info provided. And other than that the BD runs great!

I am going to guess that your carb needs cleaning (especially if you can find out if it ran good before you got it).

Any mods?

air cleaners, exhaust, cam etc?

Also check the mixture screw if it won't idle right. Poping out of the carb does sound lean though.

Try starting and running with out the enrichener then llok at the plugs

You shouldnt use it at all!!!! Two twist then start!!!
bb, think about it you add gas to the cyls. and up goes the pressures,
then you f@#kup starters,
the way i doit , turn gas on, push down both comp. releases, hold the front one down, roll over engine, add throtle , when it comes alive release the front one,
its a lot easyer on starters!!![this is for "cold" start only!}

Ian, why do you have to manually push the comp release down? They should be automatic. And what BBC was correct. 2 twists of the throttle, then start, but never twist the throttle when the starter is endgaged. That's what will screw your starter up. Adding fuel while starting increases compression and is hell on a starter.

So I have one of those K&N air filters that you clean and reinstall. My question is how do you clean it? And with what?

there are cleaning kits for the K&N that you can buy at your local auto store...I paid $15 and got the cleaner and the oil for the filter.
soak the filter with the cleaner...let stand for 15 min or whatever the directions say...then rinse with water...let dry then re-oil

When it comes to cleaning the carb...is this something you can just put into the gas tank or is this something that requires taking the carb off the BD and taking it apart? Most of the answers I am receiving seems to be leaning towards a dirty carb. So before I get into the jet situation I thought I would get back to the basics. I took the BD out this morning and put in Shell gas high test. It seems to run somewhat better but it still spits out the carb at times and at low to medium speeds. I think its a good idea to clean the carb and see what happens. Just not sure what approach to take.

Shitty fuel? Bike sitting for a bit? Happened to me just recently took about 7 miles to get thru the bad shit...spitting and sputter all the way then got to the good stuff bike ran fine

Could be the fuel. It had regular gas in it from last year. So I am hoping with the high test from shell it to will fix itself. As far as I can see from Shell there is no ethenal in their gas.

Awg, I would go to the forms and go to tech. and look up how to ajust your super g and reajust it and set you air, and acc.,pump and idle correct and you may be surprized.

X2. Its the only way to know everything is right. Otherwise your just guessing. You are showing lean symptoms for sure. The black plugs are from to much pulling of the enrichener I am sure. Pull carb, clean, check all jets, then adjust. You will be fine then.

And Awg, ALWAYS fill with premium gas, even if it has ethenol. The higher the octane, the better. To get to the "good" gas faster, you may want to drain/syphon your tank and go back with fresh, high octane fuel. That, along with a complete carb adjustment may be all you need.

"AWG" I got to ask you, whats changed on your scoot ?
Or has it always been running like this ?

With proper Jetting and adjustments you really dont need the enricher.

Nothing has been changed since Ive had it. It has the stock Kernar exhaust. I had it shipped up here (Ohio) from Texas. I didn't do any riding because of the weather. All I did was start it a few times and let it warm up. At that time you can crack the throttle without any hesitation. You would have never expected a problem. Then it ran out of gas, ( it didn't arrive with very much) so I went and took the gas from my gas can that I use for my lawn mowers. I know ... I know... what an ass. But I wanted to keep it running over the winter months. Then when the weather finally got warmer I took it out for a run. I would pull up on the enricher and start it right up. I then let it run for a few minutes then closed the enricher. Then tried to pull away and all it does is cough and spit out the carb. If I pull up on the enricher just a wee pit it would run pretty good and I can ride away. I did that for one day. Drove it around. Tries several times to close the enricher but once again it would cough and spit. I did change the plugs. Since this was shipped to me I dont know where the carb settings are. It may of been adjusted down south there. And its a hell of a lot warmer down there then here. So maybe a combonation of things. I think for now I will run a few tanks of high test through it. I will not use the enricher when starting it up. I'll see how that goes. Like I said this is the first time I had it out since I received it. Maybe sitting for so long had some thing to do with it.
