Rear tire wear???

I just found out this past weekend, that no matter how good your tread is on the rear tire, it's still gonna slide all over the place in the rain.

Kansas,
Ive had the exact same problem since day one (April 2005). I keep my tires at 40psi and do my best to kepp the rear properly aligned. I dont believe its just the rear wheel alignment as Ive had Tampa BDM replace my tire and a chopper shop here in Jax replace it. Sometimes I do it. Ive been told its the road crown, my wallet, I lean while riding, so on. None of them make sense. I was also told that some of the 04 choppers had a frame tweak. I dont know if this applied to hardtails too. I called Phil at Daytec a couple years ago and he explained how to check my frame. I did and all seemed ok. I can only conclude it must be an engine/tranny/wheel alignment. Im not a mechanic, so that is just a guess. Something I wonder is why does this only happen to the 300's? I never hear of regular size tires or the 330's complaining about this. I hope this helped.

I just had the same thing and I loosened the axle nut and turned the left hand axle set screw about 1 turn to see if it would center the wear for the rest of the tire life, for an experiment, but then I ran over a big ass bolt and the tire was caput. I replaced with a new one and now I have to start all over.:whoop:
This one by the way has 5k on it.

Dam unlucky to ride over a pen, nails and screws yes but a pen. Incredable.:roll::roll:

I put a new tire on mine just before sturgis due to the fact the left side was a little thinner than the right, it was getting close anyways but could of probably ran it another 1k miles. I also noticed I throttle harder out of left corners than right for some reason.? Possible that comming out of left hand corners causing my left side to wear a little more than right. Idk.

When you ride with no hands does your dog ride straight up or do you have to put a little lean into it to keep it tracking straight?

I read the link on tire wear, and this is the most probable cause, not road crown..:2thumbs:

I wouldn't go too crazy over this. My original rear tire did the same which I changed at 11,000 miles. My current cobra has 8,500 miles with similar wear that will need to be changed within 1,000 miles. I also just changed out my front tire with 15,000 miles also wearing on the left side. Between the road crown and left hand turns taking longer to make than a right hand turn that is the explanation for the uneven wear on that side.. Don't fret and enjoy the ride...

What about right side wear, on a 2002 Pit Bull??????????
Misalignment. With my 04 Pit I could never get the alignment quite right, until I tore it down and aligned the motor Trans and rear tire at the same time. Runs true and has even wear (for Kansas anyway).

We have discovered this not to be the case, we know these bikes to handle wet roads with precision, agility and they inspire complete confidence. New tires and tires that will wear out soon, Big Dogs were meant to be rode in all weather conditions except the ice / snow. Grab too much throttle and the rider will be led to believe what you mention.

I've ridden all kinds of bikes in all kinds of weather, and to say choppers inspire complete confidence in the rain is total BS. :loony: I can and do ride in the rain( it happens sooner or later), but If you can avoid it, you should.

:iagree: and with any bike for that matter!

My K9 rear tire is all over the place on a wet road (while cornering).... it doesn't matter how careful I am on the throttle...

is that TORQUE!!!! :D

Wow, total bs?
:willy_nilly:One has confidence, one does not and calls bs on another? funny shit. Everyone has diff levels of comfort, or lack of it, no one can say what is what with each rider.

I have three motorcycles and the dog is the only one I am comfortable enough to ride in the rain. Never had an issue with wet roads while riding in wet weather conditions. However, the Harley feels top heavy and tend to ride slower than when on the hound in wet weather, and not inspired at all when on the Buell in inclement weather.

There is another NW forum member that rides far more than I do and prolly rides in the rain on a daily basis.

It may be riding in the rain is an issue for most, yet for many it is not.

Tires are not the issue in the rain. It's the all the ability of the nut that connects the seat to the handlebars -- aka the rider.

Any argument against that tells me that the rider is not confident in their ability or doesn't have the training and experience to be riding in the rain. :argue:

And probably should get the training and experience after they pull their tampon out. :willy_nilly:

No, what one has, is an understanding that Choppers don't handle as well as most other street bikes in the rain, PERIOD (that was my only point). Not that you can't ride or absolutely shouldn't ride in the rain. Obviously, plenty of us do and depending on where you live you have no choice. However, riding a chopper in the rain isn't ideal. How could anybody argue against that concept? To claim otherwise, or to insult me (chacha) and claim I'm inexperienced  is just you and especially chacha jerking yourselves off. :job: Next you guys will argue that Choppers corner better than anything ever made. Good luck with that Knievel. :hi:

Had the same on my Ridgeback but the other side as over here in England we ride on the correct side of the road. Had alignment checked and it was fine, had been running it at the recommended 42 since i bought it in February and only got about 3000 miles out of it, spoke to the bloke i bought it off and he was running it at 22 and recons he got about 5000 out of the one before. Decided to run it at 26 and if i have to put a new tire on every year so be it. On the plus side though after 3000 miles at 42, it now feels like i am riding a softail.
Right side of the road = Right Side Jack Azz!!!!
