Primary Vent Upgrade.

I am interested in this because i believe my K9 has developed this problem.
I will investigate, but if the vent is clogged simply blowing air back into the primary should clear the problem and changing the oil should eliminate it.
As for running a hose from my primary to my gearbox, i have never hear of anythig as silly as that, who in their right mind would want to add comtaminates to a gearbox?
If however it connects into the vent line of the gearbox then maybe i can see that.
However i would still be worried that some shit may run back into the gear box.
I'm surewhat ever you do youwould want to elevate the hose to allow venting and not allow and easy way to drain your primary. IMO anyway.
The hose or vent goes out into the air...the Baker fix is a smaller actuator (push rod) for the clutch, and it then vents into the transmission via that push rod...I'll have to call baker and ask them...I'd still rather vent into the environment, maybe run it up and out with a hose, or just try it first with a bigger hole and a bigger breather vent.....since I've never had one, may solve my issue.....

The clutch rod you guys are talking about does not vent into transmission. It goes through Main shaft and out to right side ball and ramp assembly under pulley cover. Not sure who you spoke with at Baker, but I would say this information is not correct. The reason they made the rod a few thousands smaller was due to rubbing issues. There was not enough clearance between the OD of the rod and the ID of the main shaft. So the easy fix was to make OD of rod slightly smaller, in turn no more noise. You also want to grease the rod every time you do a full service on bike.
The venting is normally done between the starter and primary along with the small vent (if it has one) The vent was a service bulletin and needed to be installed at a dealership between 2005 and 2007...after that, they came from the factory already installed ( In later 2007 I believe ) Increasing the size of vent is not a bad thing...but keeping the oil changed out in primary every 2500 miles will help as well. If you stay with an actual Primary type lubricant, you will also stay a little cleaner IMO.

Thanks Andrew! Is the starter vent, the mod I've seen on here where a groove is added to the starter?

Andrew, since I'm starting from scratch, what size OD hole would you recommend since OEM is 10-32....1/8" or 1/4"? I would think and hope 1/8" would be sufficient?

And, should I run a tube, or just screw a vent right into the hole I tap?

Thanks,

Marc

Sorry i miss read, i must have thought you were talking about something else other than the primary vent.
So i unscrewed mine and cleaned it as Andrew stated, there was nothing there.
Changed my oil while i was in the area. My primary drain plug has seen far better days and needs replacing.................badly. Is this a S&S or Bakers part and does anyone have that part # please?

Still searching for this small oil leak

I vented my primary to the ground and it makes even more of a mess so I made a catch can that sits under the seat and removed 4 oz of oil.

You can get the primary drain plug from the Kaptain....WSW...i bought a couple from him, one to replace now, and one for the future...comes with O-ring and magnetized....

Shout out to bigdogbro....followed his 'between the ears' vent filter upgrade...worked great. I did it because i did not have a vent in my 05 at all, didn't exist. And, looking around, even on ebay, some of the primary's they are selling, don't have the vent in the back either.

Got all his parts as listed from McMaster for a total of $28. Got a Irwin drill/tap combo kit (21 drill bit and a 10-32 tap) at Lowe's for $6....and now i have my vent.

Drilled hole from inside of primary. I used a keyboard vac (well, made my wife hold it) while I was drilling to suck up all the metal shavings while drilling, I also have the rest of the inner primary covered off....

Tapped it from the trans side with an extension, didn't even need to re move my exhaust...while wife was holding little vac again....and voila...all good! Took about 30 minutes with prep time.

First pic is the 90 degree elbow, second one is the BRONZE vent at the end of the hose with adapter (I vented it to my vertical license plate)....if I want to change where I vent it, got extra hose....(have to order 25ft minimum) :D

Thanks BigDogBro1! :2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs:
