Primary Vent Upgrade.

It's not just the road dust, it's the splashing oil and grim internal to the primary making its way outward that could cause the air vent to plug.

Had a few minutes to spare so I provided some info.

Without the "way too much thought" we would still be riding bicycles and you wouldn't have a choice to run a Karata.

I don't remember the size tap I used when I installed the button vent on my primary but it may be a 10-32 or maybe 1/8". My 05 only had the inspection cover vent and it blew oil out on the primary so I installed the button. I still have a problem with oil leaking back past the starter jack shaft and dripping from the starter so I am going to put a larger vent where the button is at.

RRRUFF, were you able to fix the leak ? I am having the same problem and running out of patience with my 2005 chopper. your feed back is apreciated.

I did replace my primary vent with a 1/8" chrome elbow and just vented to the ground. Still getting some oil back into my starter. So I have replaced my crankshaft seal and gonna see if this helps. The seal was hard and brittle. If this dosen't stop the leaking I am gonna send my starter to KaptainAmerica, he says that he has a better seal for the starter.

I found this one between my two ears.

It's an assembly of actual parts I put together in Solidworks 3D CAD.

NO DRILLING...NO MESS INSTALLATION (If 10-32 is the correct thread).

The swivel elbow has a 10-32 thread with an O-ring. The fittings are quick-release type which allows the tubing to be easily pushed in and removed.
The tubing is 5/32" OD with about .1" ID, flexible and oil resistant. The venting capacity with this hose is more than enough to provide for any air expansion in the primary area as it slowly warms up.

Nobody has answered my earlier question yet on what thread type and size the BDM primary vent is. If it's a 10-32 then this setup can be screwed into the BDM vent hole and the new breather vent can be remotely located away from dirt and water clogging.

NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR TYPOS OR INACCURATE INFORMATION....USE AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Anyone determine the thread size of the stock vent hole yet?

Original thread size of breather vent on back of primary according to BDM part number is: 10-32" if anyone is still looking.....:D

Did you use the exact parts from the write up?

Where did you run the tube and vent to? How long?

Thanks,

Marc

Actually looking at it again, I did not use the exact set up. I did not include the screened bolt on the end (because it had been lost), I just ran out a hose zip tied to my swing arm. It ends behind the brake caliper

Thanks. Just noticed mine doesn't even have the hole for the vent, put some new gaskets on and now it ONLY leaks after a long ride...so I was digging around for a solution, either 10/32 or a little bigger...but if the OEM size of 10-32 works, might as well start with that and tap a hole....:D

Thanks, I appreciate it.....

No hole? That's weird. There is another option that I was made aware of by Baker. I didn't want to do this, because I didn't want to go back into the clutch after having myriad issues with it. You can get a slightly smaller diameter actuator rod from Baker so that the primary vents into the trans. This is the Baker recommended work around. JT over there told me that they have a part number designated specifically for the application. Next time I need to go into the clutch I will do this.

Don't know if I want it venting into the trans....all it's going to take me is to drill a hole, tap it, and put a vent cap on....seems i'd rather have it vent OUTSIDE than into the trans....but may do some research on it...

Thanks,

Marc

No problem. Maybe give Baker a call... Not that it is a big deal to drill and tap. The only issue is misting on the primary. My set up mists against the rear run a bit. It take awhile to build up, but it bugs me because I like the bike to be really clean

I am interested in this because i believe my K9 has developed this problem.
I will investigate, but if the vent is clogged simply blowing air back into the primary should clear the problem and changing the oil should eliminate it.
As for running a hose from my primary to my gearbox, i have never hear of anythig as silly as that, who in their right mind would want to add comtaminates to a gearbox?
If however it connects into the vent line of the gearbox then maybe i can see that.
However i would still be worried that some shit may run back into the gear box.
I'm surewhat ever you do youwould want to elevate the hose to allow venting and not allow and easy way to drain your primary. IMO anyway.

Not a hose to the gear box, a smaller actuator rod. The hose mentioned goes out to the environment

Unscrew it, clean it (I used oven cleaner & air because had nothing else) screw it back in place and you are done. I've done it a couple times and it only takes 10 minutes.

If you put the vent breather back on, maybe the misting would stop.... :D
