I love my bike and would certainly buy another BDM. I was very worried about buying a "custom" bike because I know so little about working on motors, etc. but I have been pleased with my bike to say the least.

I just bought a 2006 K9, the guy who owned it had installed air shocks and it did not come with a pressure guage. Apparently the newer ones come with a guage, he went back to Big Dog and they installed the presure guage for free..that's pretty good customer relations
About that time, BDM was having difficulty with the guage failing, while the rest of the system worked fine. At one time, they even recommended installing the system without the guage - though perhaps informally. That's probably what happened with yours.

Nope.

If I bought another bike it would be simple HD.

Then if I wanted a custom I would just buy a stripped down something simple or build it my damn self.

my $0.02

Gasman?...... i teared up a little reading that!

I would like to get an "old man" bike, (street glide), for the long trips with the wifey. BUT! the Ridgeback is way to much fun to get rid of.

:iagree: I have both HD and BD. The HD gets ridden all the time. I guess it's just the kind of riding I enjoy doing I suppose and I don't get that from the BD. Sure the BD is fun to ride, has insane power and gets all the looks. Maybe "Geezer Glide Syndrom" has snuck up on me. Everyone has a differerent flavor they enjoy. The main thing is that we DO ride and the people that drive Cages ALL the time don't know what their missing

Alright Chris...

When the most prolific poster on the forum says he wouldn't buy another BD I just have to ask why?

I'm all ears dude!!!

You are probably right Marv. But as many know I just simply like to help my fellow riders. I still post, not even a small % of before, on my sportbike sites. Hell I still admin 2 of them.

I see that since I posted no, it seems more are willing to step out and say no as well. That is good, speak your minds. Waykool... what's up with you?

DRB... yeah well. I just don't think there is enough R&D into some of these bikes. I believe they are still haunted by many of the "older generation hd" problems. Problems that HD has engineered themselves away from. On one hand these problems give the bike soul but on the other, soul isn't that great when you are constantly having to fix something or stuck on the side of the road. Soul... shit... those poor boys down south have soul while they sing the blues... blues blues blues...

Beyond that, sure they are fast, flashy, loud, ect. But when I ride the wife's 883 even its a simpler ride. You seem to just ride the bike and ignore the others. Plus, I was never worried if the circuit breaker would pop from a VR spike, or a bolt would fall out, the trans nut come loose, mirrors shake loose, heat shields come loose, ehc failing, headlight falling off, stupid little harness connectors failing, getting it wet, ect ect ect... Just ride it. Pure n simple.

I think the problem is that, for me at least... a big dog is a hot rod. If we were talking cars... you owned a hot rod, say a 71 Chevelle or Nova. You would also own a normal car like a 2004 F150. Take the F150 for everyday driving and the hot rod for special events. Those that own a BDM and a HD have it made. Many can't afford both and have choose...

Does that help on my POV on why I wouldn't buy another?

Perfectly, thanks for your candor Chris.

It's guys like you that would put Big Dog on the map of reliability if they were only smart enough to hire you... :D

I wouldn't go that far.

I was thinking about this more after I posted it...

I will give BDM that they do well on customer service. probably better than most companies in any market. However, is that due to a lack of the R&D I said above? Who knows...

Also, the dealership network. Not sure about your area but the dealership are seriously lacking. Not only in quanity but also quality. Don't believe that... allow me to take you to a few HD dealers.

Why not? A guy like you that knows the machine so well would be a valuable asset to BDM.

When a company puts out a product that is less than stellar (in some ways), great customer service is their only alternative if they want to stay in business.

Also, the dealership network.
No need to say more. Within 100 miles of where I live there's 3 Big Dog dealers (three because one of them has two stores) and around 20 HD dealerships. :(

That's the Big Dog attitude dude!

However, I do have to disagree with you on most of this. With the exception of EHC failures and the fear of water all the problems you list are also indigenous to Harley's. I can't remember how many HD parts (shifter lever, coil cover, dash bolt, odometer reset knob, seat bolt, sissy bar bolts, etc.) I've left along the highway. That's why long ago I learned to carry Lock-Tite, zip ties, and little extra piece of wire in my tool kit. :D

I think cabin fever has set in Chris. Just wait until that first really nice day when you jump on the Dog and head out. You'll probably be less than a mile from the house and you'll say to yourself, "God damn, I love this fuckin' motorcycle!!!" :2thumbs:

YMMV,

Dennis

Alot of very good points across the board. Opinions are opinions and thats what they are. I agree with Chris on many points that he brought up.

I would buy another dog, but part of that is because I love to wrench on my scoot. Not saying that I wouldn't wrench on an H-D, but each as their own.

I don't have alot of the problems like what I read on the forum with wiring issues and especially with the EHC. I have an older dog that has ALOT of parts that are interchangeable with H-D. More like a souped up softail in my oppinion. The newer dogs are more "one-off" that dog has designed and hasn't done all the r&d that probably should be done.

Alot of the guys I ride with have "imports". They turn the key.... it starts....they ride.....done with the ride.....they park in the garage and forget about it...till the next time they put the key in the ignition. I feel more "connected" with my bike when I know that I have put on wrench on it to feel the bolt. These guys I ride with show complanency with there bikes and just park it and forget it about it.

I was talking with my buddy the other day and was "venting" to him about how shit just wasn't going right with putting the bike back together after a small winter rebuild. He said "dude don't STRESS it...........it's your hobby....don't let your hobby stress you out......do it because you like it not because YOU HAVE TOO...its not life or death". After that I took a totally different look at my bike. Granted if I was on a ride on my bike just started frickn up I would be pissed.......but just gives me another excuse to jump on this unbelievable band of brothership site to figure out what the fuck is going on. To sum it all up.....if I just had to put oil and gas it my the bike....I would get bored with it the first month....hands down. Just my .02

With all the bikes made, and I've had more than enough of them I would venture to say I have had more enjoyment with my BD than all the others combined. Ya they sometimes have their issues but thats ok, I enjoy wrenching on it and it gives me satisfaction every time someone comments on it which is every time I take it for a spin. Now some would say their R&D is lacking, well everyone has to start somewhere and if you want a Jap bike their out their, just go buy one, for me it's Big Dog all the way.

lucky for me all my "stuck on the side of the rode" problems have been mechanical, never the EHC. always got her rolling.

being the ignition is powered thru the EHC, when that goes down your done. all you can do is beg for a tow.

i would like to see the ignition powered thru the key and a relay like S&S shows their CR wiring diagram. that way its not dependent on the EHC to run.
