Paint Saver Ring Removal

Hi all,

So, the old stuck gas cap issue! I was able to remove my gas cap finally, bought 2 new aluminum thread pop up style caps, to avoid that issue again. But now can't get the paint saver rings off! I purchased the removal tool, after waiting 2 weeks to get that, go to use, within moments broke off one of the tabs! Also tried the hammer and screw driver but is digging into the ring! UGH! Does anyone have any suggestions?

Please Help!

spray some silicone underneath the paint saver and let it soak a while. It should soften up the rubber gasket and make it easier to get off. I did that to mine and it came right off.

I have filled my tank with water and used a heat gun on the paint saver to heat it up
till it was nearly hot to touch and unscrewed it with the tool.
I did not care about the paint as I was going to repaint it anyway. No paint damage thou.

It would be interesting to know the name of the silicone spray that released the seal without damaging the paint. I was thinking the heat gun would work with the tank purged.

I know I have a good coat of polish on the tank but I never even thought about the silicone damaging the paint. I think it was made by Liquid Wrench , I guess you could try WD 40 also. I did not spray it like crazy , I had a rag around it the whole time and just used little squirts so there was no over spray.

Also I just remembered that there was some kind of thread sealant on the threads. Maybe that is why he is having such a hard time removing them.

Well Ernie, it's good to know that it won't mess up the paint. And, I think you are right about the sealant. Seems like some have done damager to the tank trying to get the threaded portion out.

Thanks guys for all the tips. I will try the combo of WD-40 and a heat gun. The seller I purchased the removal tool on Ebay sent me a replacement, which was cool. Will let you know my results.

Forgot to update. I finally was successful! After a 2nd removal tool, spraying WD-40 under paint saver, slight heating with heat gun and crescent wrench. Didn't even need much torque! Thanks again guys. Of course now I have the issue of removing the remaining parts of the
rubber gasket that is hard as a rock! Tried shaving off with blade, some came off but worried about having an accident and further damaging my paint around opening.

I got a little bubble going on, not much but a little and have been thinking about replacing the cap with the kuraykin recessed one.. just not sure I want to get into something that would down my bike for a month if it goes sideways
