Help! Belt issue.

Look close @ the pully teeth. Towards the inside you can see the wear from the belt being offset. Looks awful sharp to me. Im getting old tho..

When you get the rest of that ruined belt off, can ya give us a good clear picture of the pulley ? Also, how are you aligning the wheel pulley with the tranny pulley?

Rear tire had/has maybe 50 miles in it. I also changed bearings at that time as well.

Put belt on put a touch of tension on it and spin it. Make sure it’s tracking straight. I also have marks on both sides I put on there. I miced it and made marks.

I ordered a 132 1 1/8th this time. I bought the smaller pulley from Barnes a few years ago since I have to pull it apart and do all this again. I might as well put all the new parts I have in it in it.

Just another thought popped into my head. Any chance of looseness in the swing arm ? seems to me that under load the belt that tracks straight under no real tension,could make the swing arm be pulled to the side under load, causing the belt to track off to one side. ( just another dumb thought)

I’m in sturgis, rode 6 miles belt broke. No biggie. Went and got one. Got it all put together. Tightened the belt. Aligned the wheel. Roasted tire by hand. Belt walks off front pulley. It comes off about 1/2”. Then stays there.
How do I fix that type of alignment issue?
ive never had the trans out and I would almost think its in a fixed position due to the primary.
do I fix it by moving one side of the tire back? Maybe im over thinking it. Please help.

my thoughts is that the only thing that changed was the tire/ wheel when installing the new belt. that has to be where the alignment issue is in some shape or form.

Just another idea. Hold a straightedge against the side of the rear pulley and the tranny pulley to see how they align with each other.

Home from sturgis. Had some time to pull it apart. I think my belt spun on itself. Kind of like a retread tire. Check out the pictures. I think the teeth stayed and the metal cord type stuff spun. See photos. My helpers here too.

Pulley teeth are not sharp. Maybe worn a little but not as bad as it looked with belt fragments on it

That pulley looks fine to me. I have never seen a belt come apart quite like that one did.. it literally destroyed it.

I agree with Snuffy post #9. I think you need to inspect all the related parts in the drive and chassis. Of course, check the usual suspects worn bearings, pivot axels etc. of the rear chassis and wheel. Look closely for any cracks in the frame of the bike. Some Big Dog frames have cracked.
Ask Barnes what drive belt goes with the new pulley you plan to use. These files may help you. Pay attention to pg 4 of the Alignment file for final check . It's important to rotate the tire forward and backward to assess proper tracking.

I ordered the belt Barnes told me too. So that’s covered. New bearings in rear wheel when I put tire on this time. I’d be lying, 40-100 miles on them. Swing arm feels fine bearing wise.
