That time has come when the rubbers on the foot pegs have started coming apart. Not prepared to pay $6-700 for a new set just yet. Here’s what I did.
Tools:
100ft of 550 cord. Don’t skimp on this and get the real stuff.
Sharp scissors/ knife.
Lighter.
File fine tooth.
Brake cleaner and rag.
Steps are easy.
Rip off the old rubbers.
I used the file to remove the nubby bits of rubber.
Then a quick wipe with brake cleaner to get the crap off.
Started with a Clove hitch on the underside of the peg.
Tightly wrapped, careful to pack the cord tight to the previous wrap.
Finished on two half hitches. Though could finish on a clove as well. Then burn/melt the ends close to the hitch.
Will see how they fair after a bit of use. Even still. For $6 and 20mins work, I’m cool with rewrapping every 6 months or so.
I think it looks pretty good too.
Update: Took it out and did about 250 miles the other day. Cord is still tight and looks clean. I actually prefer this now to the factory rubbers. My feet would always start to slip outwards on the pegs. Now they stay right where I put them. When it comes to replacing them I might get a bit experimental with that wrapping method and see what I can come up with.
