Foot peg rubbers replaced for $6

That time has come when the rubbers on the foot pegs have started coming apart. Not prepared to pay $6-700 for a new set just yet. Here’s what I did.
Tools:
100ft of 550 cord. Don’t skimp on this and get the real stuff.
Sharp scissors/ knife.
Lighter.
File fine tooth.
Brake cleaner and rag.

Steps are easy.
Rip off the old rubbers.
I used the file to remove the nubby bits of rubber.
Then a quick wipe with brake cleaner to get the crap off.
Started with a Clove hitch on the underside of the peg.
Tightly wrapped, careful to pack the cord tight to the previous wrap.
Finished on two half hitches. Though could finish on a clove as well. Then burn/melt the ends close to the hitch.

Will see how they fair after a bit of use. Even still. For $6 and 20mins work, I’m cool with rewrapping every 6 months or so.
I think it looks pretty good too.

Update: Took it out and did about 250 miles the other day. Cord is still tight and looks clean. I actually prefer this now to the factory rubbers. My feet would always start to slip outwards on the pegs. Now they stay right where I put them. When it comes to replacing them I might get a bit experimental with that wrapping method and see what I can come up with.

I'm thinking of giving this a try on my shift lever but I'll whip it.

Then again, if I go to the hardware store/autoparts, then it'll be rubber.

I like this idea a lot. But I’d gut the cord so it lays flat and maybe it can be braided in two colors! Ohhh the ideas I get from this!

Looks good Dean.....you need to come back to Texarkana and will give those footpegs a workout. See how they'll hold up.
Yea mate, for sure. Be good to see ya!! I’ve finally gotten all the known kinks out of it. Only taken 7 years of owning it lol.

Looks good :old2: but I think the radiator hose is a better option, just my opinion though :D
I like the radiator hose just so you can look at a HD rider and go, yeah changed the radiator hose on my air cooled bike today! They look like a deer in the headlights or someone trying to figure out where to put the blinker fluid!

Still looking for a happy fix for the grips -- used some self fusing silicone tape and like the feel but it only last a couple of months at best. Maybe some flexseal tape might do the job!

what?

maybe you could pitch that idea to that guy from Flexseal and get a spot in his next infomercial. Hah.
