Interesting. Do not know how much of an effect this may have on the tranny, but I was just reading a couple of days ago in the ME Magazine (American Society of Mechanical Engineers) and article about constraints.

One of the examples about contraints and the effect of having too many, involved a shaft using 3 bearing (in the example Pillion Bearings) and the basic was that utilizing 3 bearing in over constraints. Basicall due to the X, Y, Z and a few others points, that 3 supports on a shaft would never truly allow the shaft to be properly supported with 3 bearings and thus overally constrained.

Basically if you have a mid bearing or support, the ends would be overally constrained and thus uneven forces and vice verse.

Not having a Baker or any tranny in front of me, but taking a quick glance at the BD Service Manual, it appears that the main shaft has 3 caged needle bearings that support such. If this is true, I wonder if this may be a case of overally constrained and thus could possibly be part of problem with the breakage of the main shafts.

Maybe if there is any other ASME members on here, they could look at the article and see what they think. I will see if I can get a link to such and post it for input.

Just a thought, but the article was pretty good and was focused on how many manufacture will tend to over constrain something and creating a problem that at times the miss and try to correct by contraining it even more.

for the people who have blown there transmissions because of main shaft problems me being one at 6800 miles on mastiff 2005. baker tranny say they have an up-dated shaft for the tranny. #dd6r-ms-2.94b stamped on the shaft I guess if the shaft being put in tranny now don't have this new number probably will break again. If have have questions here is there number 877-640-2004. on my bike no warranty they say maybe big dog might do something (not holding breath) I'll just pay it and be on my way. the shaft is like $176. maybe this might help other sick puppies.

Bigbass Glad you took time to get detail and pictures of your main shaft this has been on going problem with no explanation or reason why main shaft break. Baker has a Failure Analysis service you should try to pry some info from them. So this brings me to ask you can you take a close picture with the flower on your camera at the ends of the broken main shafts? Those fuzzy pictures look like a fracture(brittle or ductile) I have seen before from sudden excessive loading of the main shaft. Clean breaks raise a flag with me from faulty metallurgy of the so called rifle barrel main shaft to cyclic overloading from slow growing fatigue fractures(CRACKS STRESS RISERS) of the main shaft. The close picture should tell just what, how, why these parts failed if the two pieces have not rubbed with each other. If there is an updated main shaft why doesn't Baker or BDM say that they chose to take quantity over quality (faulty parts) and post serial numbers of the suspected transmissions. If torsional load had any play in this the main shaft would of been barber poled at the ends with correct heat treating process applyed to the main shaft.

Yes this is true. I have one I bought from iron lightning as a back up and it has this stamped on it and has baker decals all over the wrapper

Well, add me and my 06K9 with 5K on it to the broken tranny shaft club:angry:

They (dealer) have not called me back yet, but it definitely sounds the exact same as all the other descriptions in this thread.

I won't bore everybody with another description of the same thing.

This is bullshit!!!!:bang:

No Tranny Shaft Failures with Open Belt Primary

The logic behind open belt primaries with outer bearing supports is to reduce stress on the transmission shaft.

The stock wet chain primary runs like an out rigger on the sprockets. I would assume the transmission failures occurred during or shortly after acceleration.

For those of us without an upgraded shaft already installed, is the solution;

1. Ride easier.
2. Install a open belt primary with outer bearing supports as a preventative measure.
3. Sell the bike to someone that doesn't read this forum.

Anyone out there with a broken shaft and an open belt?

Is it the right side drive BDM Baker trannies only or both left and right ?
