Attack of the shade tree mechanic STARTER

Energy One
I decided while waiting for parts to come in the mail I would give the ol girl another once over. Just checking anything I thought may be suspect or looks to have been tampered with. And LO and BEHOLD: the following pictures show the voltage regulator leads (which should be molded into a connection) and also the lead to the battery. (Spliced and soldered) 20200422_111306.jpg20200422_111923.jpg

Stator progress: I have drained the primary. Dropped the primary cover. Removed the main sprocket (thanks for the tip @Mr. Wright ) the old stator plug was sufficiently disintegrated to the point i was able to fish it all out, chunk by chunk.
Now it looks to me like JUST TO GET TO THE PLUG HOLDER, i have to remove the whole primary housing (which means dropping the STARTER, and dropping the CLUTCK ASSY. !? :/ :( 20200427_112021.jpg

The circle with a ? is a little allen head set screw that holds the connector in place. Its usually covered with a little bit of silicon. You need to pull the set screw to put the new connector in.

Yeah. I thought it was a giant pinhead set screw. I was so dejected. We got her now tho. Bolting everything back up. Anyone happen to know the torque spec on that main compensator but? At least ballpark

Red Loc-tite 175lb. Look up Mr Wrights posts. There is a drop box link that has all the service manuals. The 2008 version has the best pictures and a lot of corrections. But there is a 2005 manual there as well.

So, a little hiccup here, maybe @Mr. Wright would have some insight on: while it appears the 2 VRs are built nearly identical. I find that the new (black) VR doesn't fit in the same spot the silver one came out of (pictured) do I need to drill out the holes in the black VR (which would make it impossible to get a socket on the nut) or look into some sort of adapter bracket? 20200427_175530.jpg20200427_175544.jpg20200427_180000.jpg

What VR/Stator did you order/get ?
Just looking at the VR's there is quite a difference.
Holes on dirty one (old I presume) are larger and threaded.
Ground tap is recessed (not on new one)
and the potted area looks much smaller on new one as well.

I ask cause I've had an incorrect setup sent to me before.

It's the compu-fire 32amp. Not to throw anyone under the bus. But Eric sent it to me it's obvious this system had been worked on too (remember the solder job!?) So I thought maybe the old one wasnt OEM spec

did you have spacers on the old unit? They came originally with spacers that would bolt up from the bottom with 1/4"-20 * 2-1/4" bolts. Thats why the holes are smaller..haha. Maybe that guy drilled the holes out before on that other VR? Weird never seen one with holes that big.

It leaves air space between the motor mount and VR so it doesn't bake itself.

That's not how your VR should have mounted. There should have been 2 spacers/standoffs and a 1/4" bolt (see the threaded holes). I believe your motor mount bolts are too long. I will see if I can find a pic.
