Attack of the shade tree mechanic STARTER

Energy One
Well lady bros and gentledudes; first attempt to start the ol girl failed. one time I was able to get an electronic *tick* and after that no signed of life. Tried to jump the solenoid to engage the starter, no dice.
This morning I took the solenoid cap off to inspect contacts and LOOKY THERE (pic below) I also noticed a piece of the plunger spring stayed behind in the housing (pic below) so I am left with no choice but to fully remove the starter and rebuild the solenoid internals. I'm still learning, so any tips or tricks in the physical removal of the starter would be greatly appreciated!! 15870661952552861399443655738641.jpg20200416_144954.jpg20200416_144822.jpg

Looks like someone has the idea that “ if it ain’t working, throw a couple pounds of solder in it “ Any chance of snagging that piece of spring outta there? Got faith in ya buddy!

I have been fishing at it with a magnet. All the while thinking of how I'm gonna clean that bubblegum of a solder job up and repair it proper. Having no experience with starters (except youtube) I am also weighing the probability that I will have to figure out how to get the starter OFF the bike and repair the solenoid properly. Hopefully this is the heart of the previous owner's 'electrical gremlin'

Keep faith in me bro! (One of us should anyway )

The solenoid plunger is in good shape (minus the spring) I just need to figure out what those balls of solder are attempting to hold on to. The signal connector SPINS 360° so whatever it WAS holding has failed now. And I'm not sure internally where that signal connector should be soldered internally within the housing; like what does it connect to ‍♂

You could probably have a local starter rebuild shop fix it pretty cheap if you take it out of the bike.

While that starter looks awful I do agree. I don't see a ground wire on either of the two bolts which would also cause it not to run. That wire in the picture the positive for the starter you removed from the solenoid bolt on the starter?

You got quite a project ahead of you.

I'm having a little trouble understanding what your asking me. I removed the battery from the bike completely. Removed the + battery lead from the main pos. Bolt (top left), unplugged the signal wire (bottom left), then I was able to slide the plunger out and I discovered that the siglan wire had a huge gob of solder on it, yet the solder doesn't actually connect anything. I can spin that signal connection 360° so now I'm trying to understand what it was supposed to be attached to ‍

Where is the ground cable from the battery mounted to? It is supposed to be attached to the top starter mounting bolts.

TL;DR (pics at bottom)
1) I wired it wrong when testing
2) starter is off the bike; now attempting to get to the brushes for further examination (help)
3) I will probably send the unit off for rebuild.

It was NOT. gentleman; I fear I stand before you a broken man, I actually had the ground bolted onto the same post that communicates between the solenoid and starter (I will make a new thread in the intro section so you guys can take turns flogging me there)
But, we are passed that whoopsie now. I have the starter off of the bike and I am now staring at it trying to figure out how to seperate the solenoid housing from the final drive. In the process I have discovered a broken mating surface (pictured)
I am slowly accepting the fact that I am probably in over my head and should have the starter rebuilt, but I feel I've done enough research I should at least give it a go!20200417_084605.jpg

I forgot to ask. I am making the assumption that it is a 2.0kw starter for RSD DSSC Baker tranny, (that's what I'm currently shopping for anyway) but can anyone tell me how to verify that? 1587132796610223709117748075003.jpg

You figured it out, thats all that matters you had me wondering what was going on bright and early this AM!

Give me a call, you look like you got quite a big project to embark on and I'll try and help you get moving I have a reman starter on the shelf I can sell for less than what it will cost to fix that starter correctly. Only caveat is you throw that old starter in the trash, that thing is the worst thing I've ever seen! Haha

Got brand new starters too, but figure try and save you a few bucks to help you get your project moving!

Shadetree: I can fix it no problem.
DOTR:es, but it may be a factory build by arc is the deep flow, not a hand build is the top surface layer, not so deep as the arc.

Shadetree: Look, dead on the road, I'll find a tree for shade waiting for AAA to come for me next day.
DOTR: I'm unit complete is a fresh made one. My bet is no AAA card and the tow will be over the price of a new starter.

Shadetree: Shit the fuck up it's my bike, my shade.
DOTR: Dare, Dare, wallet told, no harm no foul, it's your fold.

Funny, I was just in one. Just clicked, new battery. Found the one braided ground strap end was dangling under the frame. So, what would heat that one area you are now faced with? You solder it up again and the heat had nowhere to go, but ruin your work again? Remote ground strap would be a: nothing to lose situation.

Well, the saga continues...its absolutely true, if you have a wiring issue (or in my case royally BIFF it) the first thing to get smoked is the digital tach :/ I am in good spirits though, hooked on with Eric and I got a sweet starter headed my way, I'm going to attempt to rework the board on the tachometer over the weekend, if I succeed I'll be tickled pink. If I fail, who cares, it's just money. Right Eric ;)
