I have had a Craftsman 20 Gallon 5HP for about 20 years. It does all I need but I would recommend a 30 Gallon.

Hey Nuke, I got ya beat on the Craftsman, I have the 3hp/30 gal twin cylinder compressor that I bought in 1976, and even though its still kicking ass at 37 yrs old, I'm waiting for the tank to rust thru. The only thing I had to replace was the motor and thats because I used it to piant cars and it was in the same room when I was spraying, the motor sucked in too many fumes.

That's the year I was born. If you bought it on February 22nd we could be twins!!!

Hew I'll bet you $100 - 20 years ago that compressor was not made in Taiwan like the one he put the link up from.

I wont get on the buy American kick cause we make some pretty shit crap too. But let's be honest everything is made to be disposable today. Even look at cars 10 years ago you could go to Autozone and buy parts off the shelf and repair your car. Today minus the electronic bullshit you have sealed transmissions, and a whole bunch of other nonsense. Things are built and priced to be replaced not repaired.

do you think in part that this has come about because people don't want to go into the "hands on field" so to speak. And at todays labor rates, is it practical.

I wouldn't wait for it to rust through. when it does it will be at max pressure and metal will fly every where. Used tanks are easy to come by. Dumb asses buy oil less compressors and they crap out fast if used a lot,so all they have is a tank . You should be able to pick up a 60 gal for $50 to $60 .

Not denying it's not practical. It was merely a statement that things are just now built to be replaced rather than repaired.

And because like you said nobody wants to go to the "hands on field" we are losing the "middle" class so to speak. Which is unfortunate.

Well...... I bought the craftsman that I had posted the link to. It worked for the grinder but ran constantly.
I then found this on Craigslist for $75 ImageUploadedByTapatalk1363271660.963654.jpg

I bought the $75 and am returning the craftsman today.

FYI: that grinder with a soft cone is an incredible way to clean polished aluminum and I highly recommend it to anyone looking to shine their scoot up!!!

So,

Has anyone added an additional tank to their "awesome compressors" to push up the capacity? I thought about adding 10 or 20 gallons to my 20 gallons to support painting, etc.

I would think your 20 gallon would do fine now that you can use the HVLP guns. Spraying at 30-35psi instead of 60-65 psi is a huge difference on the compressor.

HVLP stands for high volume low pressure. Read HIGH volume. It won't hurt a thing to add a twenty gallon tank so you have extra air. When painting you don't want to have to stop and wait for the air to come up. Used tanks are cheap. Add it before the regulator and you will be golden.

The compressor is only part of the system requirements. Most of us need a compressed air dryer to remove the moisture for the air when sand, soda, or painting.

Years ago I used a 2hp/20 gal Craftsman compressor to paint about 150 cars with a siphon spray gun and the compressor kept up at 60-65 psi at the gun. It ran alot but kept up, then after someone torched my garage with my new car in it, is when I got the 3 hp/30 gal Craftsman that I still have.

Big difference between your 20 and 30?

It ran about 1/2 the time of the 20, I have used (20) it for air grinders and sanders. But I know the 30 handled them much easier and would handle 2-HVLP spray guns at the same time. The 30 is also 220v

Nice.

I figure for $75.00 I really can't go wrong. The die grinder works wonders on my polished wheels and forks.
