2005 Pitbull Running bad

I just Purchased a 05 pitbull and have spent around 1500 to work out problems first with very hard to start and second with it bogging around 3k RPM . the mechanic put jets in it and its now running worse than when I brought it to him. it now has a lot of black smoke and backfires constantly . It dies at idle once warmed up and hesitates constantly jerking the bike forward slightly . I called the mechanic back and he says its probably an electrical issue like the EHC does that control the fuel and air mix ? and cause these problems ? because I am thinking its still not jetted right any thoughts ?

First, make sure the auxiliary vent plug is removed from the carb. Second, those spike air cleaners are more trouble than they are worth. They look cool, but just don't flow very well. If it's a jetting problem, you are better off adjusting it yourself. There are a lot of fly by night mechanics that aren't familiar with big S&S engines and a G carb. Third, the 05's came with an E carb and restrictor plates. I noticed the previous owner upgraded to S&S rocker boxes. The 05's came with TP rocker boxes. They are known to cause problems occasionally. This wouldn't cause an air/fuel problem, but if he spent the money to upgrade that, then I can't imagine he wouldn't upgrade the carb. Check the left side of the carb. It will be stamped either E or G.

It is Definitely stamped with a G , if looking at the view shown on the lower left side of the carb. when you say auxiliary vent plug do you mean the air bleed jet ?air bleed.jpg

No, the plug is on the left side of the carb. It's explained in the tuning manual. It definitely needs removed with those spike air cleaners. It might be the source of your problems.

Check and see if the rubber caps on top of the carb are cracked or missing... check and see what jets are in it...if it was me i would put the jets back to a .031 intermediate and a .076 main jet and check the rubber caps...idle air mixture screw should be around 1 1/2 turns counterclockwise from lighty seated...also check to see if the accelerator pump is 2 turn counterclockwise from lightly seated....get all that back to normal and them see what you have then

This guy seems to have a similar setup and I don't know if I should just jet it like this to see if the combination works best Will do Knot

would this air cleaner do better or is anything other than factory no good to replace the spike one ?
The dual runner is one of the best air cleaners you can buy. If you can find one that fits your bike, I would highly recommend it. You can also go back to the classic teardrop air cleaner. It's a fairly good ac with a classic look. You can boost the flow with the wider element.

You might also pull the spark plugs and see how they look. A "lot of black smoke", you say it has, sounds like it's way to rich so the plugs are probably trashed also. (or, maybe not )

Chances are the two rubber caps on the carb have rotted and are sucking air. This will cause horrible performance.

First I would like to say thank you for all your help . So I looked at the Carb this morning The Vent screw as shown seems to be removed already with nipple fitting and a hose running from it, I'm assuming this is ok. I looked for the rubber caps and only found one is there another one somewhere and if so where ? I looked at many images online to try and find the second with no luck . I'm thinking about removing the air cleaner and just run it down the road without one and see if its causing the issue. any thoughts ?

I adjusted the Idle air #2 by screwing clockwise until lightly seated then backed off 1 and a half turns counter clockwise. then I did the same thing for the accelerator pump screw #3 turned clockwise till seated then backed off counter clockwise 2 turns . The air filter is of but the bike wont start . i keep getting backfires and puffs of white blue smoke out of the carb . Do I need to open up the fuel air mix more ?

If you only see one....you blew one off somewheres. I keep spares in the tool roll for that reason.

The nipple with the hose is the overflow. The vent plug is on the other side under "S&S Super". On the 117's, there should only be one cap. The other nipple shouldn't be capped. It should be hooked to the breather line on the front head. I would drop the bowl to see what jets the mechanic put in there. Did you remember to turn the fuel on?
