My first thought here is, key switch. If it going bad, that would be the first sign.

Funny I had just ran out before that on ride and switched to reserve, then filled it up.....wouldn't the bike putter before engine dying if that the case?

When it happened to me I rode a couple of miles and bike stopped pulled over checked everything battery etc couldn't find anything turned the key started away I went 2 miles down the rode done it again this time I switched it to reserve and removed the gas cap and gave the tank a shake it got me home then I pulled the tank and petcock screen it didn't seem that dirty but I had previous problems same symptoms and it was the liner anyway put it back together hasn't missed a beat since while I had the tank off I took the opportunity to check all wires and connectors under tank and filled the ehc connectors with dielectric grease and cleaned battery terminals and connections but I am 90% sure it was fuel and if you just ran out and changed to reserve probably best place to start
Cheers

one more thing I did as Mr Wright said was spray some contact cleaner in the key barrel just for good measure I did notice a lot of black cleaner draining out something to remember I was told not to have heavy key rings and shit hanging out of your ignition they don't like it let me know how you go

Isn't there some little deal with GM about hanging 25 pounds on your key.... seems like I heard something about that... ??

To remove the petcock turn off fuel and disconnect fuel line I would remove the tank (don't have to but may as well clean it out while its off) and simply turn the tank upside down grab a spanner and undo the petcock on the end of the petcock will be a long screen filter inspect and clean I use some throttle body cleaner or carb cleaner drain the old fuel left in tank into a clean container and see if there is any shit in it also while the petcock is off motion the petcock from on to reserve while blowing in it to make sure you have fuel flow wouldn't hurt to also inspect condition of fuel line hope this helps

This is a very common issue with many solutions. What year do you have? Does it have the original EHC? It can be any of the above. For me, I think it is the key switch which grounds out the EHC to turn it on. But it is sensitive. I put Wire Plus in mine and it solved most of the shutdowns (i.e. less sensitive) but I still have the original key switch! My issues with the original EHC started with occasional shutdowns to getting worse. In the beginning, it would always restart by cycling the key switch. Finally, it didn't want to respond and I put WP in.

Good. Original EHC. Look for fraid wires under the gas tank. Remove the EHC plugs and inspect and clean the connections. Pack it with dielectric grease and make sure the plugs are secure.

There are a lot of reasons for your issue. So, search the forum, make a list and do one thing at a time. Ride and repeat for the next item on the list.

Good luck to you.
