The only real item I bought off Ebay unseen was a turbo chainsaw which I used Friday afternoon , and almost all day yesterday.(Living in the wind blown state of Tenn.)

Buying a scooter I would have to go see it in person, I am not that trusting.

have done several

i have both bought and sold bikes on ebay and every single one worked out the best, would not be scared to buy another one at any time as long as you are careful with what you are doing.

I bought my 03 chopper from Wendell N.C and had it shipped by Allied Shipping (well worth it) to N.E.Oklahoma. It went very well and iam happy.. And like racwld1 said "careful" ...

I bought my K-9 without seeing it...It was on Craigslist and E-bay, I wrote an e-mail to the seller that I would buy from Craigslist for the askingprice but the seller told me to bid on E-bay....So I did and I was highest bidder with $ 401 more than Craigslist. Yesterday the BD would go in the container for shipping to Holland. I'll ask my agent today if it all went well, so far i haven't heard from him that the BD could not be picked up at the seller, so far so good though.....

I've got 1 buddy that bought a Victory 8-ball off of Craig's list in Ames Iowa that was even better than the guy described and i got another buddy that bought a Harley streetbob with a salvage title in Minneapolis Mn that was repaired and it was a total piece of crap. Took him a year and a half to get it registered here because everything had to be repaired properely. They fixed it using parts from 3 different bikes. Really he should have known it would be a problem with a salvage title but they reassured him everything was excellent.

Got my 04 ridgeback from ebay after getting the run around on a vengaence warrior. Told the guy with the warrior to forget it and he could do as he wanted with it. He still made several attempts to get me to buy after uppi ng the price on me 1000.00 and then coming back to the original price 10,500. I went to ebay and found the ridgeback for 10,500 buy it now. The guy was great as verified by his feedback. I rode the bus from Kansas City to OKC. He picked me up at the bus station and drove me to Norman ok where he lived. He wanted to make sure that the bike was what I expected it was showroom clean. I had some issues with it when I started home because it had not been ridden much as he had 15 custom bikes. I called him from OKC about it and he told me to take it to thunder cycles they would be waiting for me and would take care of any problems at his expence. After spending a night in a nearby hotel I woke up to find that he had driven 60 miles to the hotel to take me back to the shop and make sure everything was done to my satisfaction. You dont find guys like that very often these days. Best purchase I ever made.

Bought my 08 Ridgeback off cycletrader - never saw it in person but it was better than expected and even included the chrome package (which the owner never mentioned). Only issue was that it took 8 weeks to arrive from OK to NY. Dealing long distance does take some trust.

Figured I would share my eBay story in a nutshell.
I found my 03 Pitbull listed on eBay last summer for a great Buy It Now price.
Upon contacting the owner, I found out he never sold any big items on eBay and was unaware of the fees it would cost him once sold.
So we negociated a deal and he pulled it off of eBay. I told him to keep in mind that I saved him close to $1k in seller fees on eBay so he took that in to consideration while we negociated the price.
All that took place on a Thursday, and on Saturday my wife and I drove 8hrs to Indiana to pick it up. It was EXACTLY as described. He had all service documents, and there were NO surprises once I got there that wasn't shown in the pictures posted.
Needless to say, I had a great and pain-free experience!!!

With all that said, I don't think I would ever send someone $$$ w/o first seeing the Dog in person.

Bought and sold on eBay

In early November I picked up a 2008 Big Dog K9 off of eBay. Earlier (Aug) I sold my 09 Harley Rocker C on eBay. Two years earlier I sold a Harley Softail Standard on eBay. I've had nothing but the best experiences both buying and selling on eBay. Having said that, I've decided I really don't want to keep the Big Dog and I've listed it for sale on CycleTrader.com. On eBay it's been my experience that a lot of 'bidders' are not that serious. Just want to 'play'. And b it can cost so much more on eBay. Thought I would use CT and see what happens. The bikes I've sold and those I've bought have been portrayed accurately and I've not had any problem either way. Guess I'm just a trusting soul. The last person I sold to we came to an agreement (by phone) and he drove here with a trailer and looked it over and we completed the deal with no changes or hesitation. So I'd say, if it looks good (in pictures and description) I wouldn't have a problem using most online buying sites. Now to sell the K9.
My two cents worth.

Ebay can be a Goldmine and a Godsend to *Those who do the research, homework, background work and in person communication* to the seller that they want to do business with.
VIN # verification, seller background, lots & LOTS of Close -Up Pictures and details when you ask the seller -as well as personal communication and up front references that you look into, investigate and have a good first hand knowledge & feeling about.
Buying a motorcycle across state lines and at distances needed to reach by plane(or long ride) is always chancy-but the sellers with lots of good solid feedback(Private Sellers) are usually trustworthy and easily reachable and will exchange info and other details that make the BUYER feel confident that the deal is as represented.

Nothing beats a close up personal inspection ~ and I have had people drive here from many miles away to see & BUY the items I sell and are In The Shop & Open to their inquiries.
Someone's earlier post mentioned "Family in Law Enforcement" as a benefit.
Well I'll give you my take on that : Bad Guys aren't afraid to rip off cops.
Try and chase a scumbag outta state who ripped you off : good luck -shoot em twice more for me:D.

It's a game of chance and a crapshoot to send someone lotsa $$$$$$$ for a motorcycle you haven't ridden, heard Run,Seen in person or Know the seller enough to NOT worry about sending $$$$$ far away outta state and hoping the deal will work out in your favor.*IF* you are blessed and fortunate enough to be able to buy outta state and ship the bike back to wherever you are-Plane Fare isn't much more to Go SEE the bike and make sure it's as described and runs as promised -then deal in a Bank Check from YOUR Bank and you have at least a little chance of recourse in terms of collecting a refund if the deal goes sour for you & the seller trys to Fuck you.

Plane fare is cheap insurance and you cant put a price on "Peace of Mind" when purchasing a motorcycle outta state that has to be shipped back to you a far distance. GO SEE IT-Pay with certified bank Funds and use a reputable Insured & Bonded Shipper to get it back home.

Bikes on Ebay

I have purchased a lot of bikes off Ebay and I would never pay for a bike in full unless I have seen it in person first or had someone look it over for me before handing over the money. A small deposit ($500) to hold it after the Ebay auction is understandable if the auction required it so the seller knows you're serious but make sure you have done your research on the seller and discussed on the phone, not just email. Do not send funds blindly to an out of state buyer and hope for the best. I purchased two bikes last year in Las Vegas and California. Flew out to test ride each before paying for them and then had them shipped to my house. The seller of the Vegas bike even paid my plane fare and shipping to make the deal. Ask about service history and even go a little further and call the service shop where it was serviced and ask about the bike and its maintenance history. Most shops will be honest and give you a good idea if bike is as described. Put eyes on the bike and do your reserach before handing over the money, that is my advice.

Don't forget to get a copy of the title before sending funds to ensure the seller actually owns the bike and match the VIN# to the bike.

Always try to buy something within driving distance, you know where you can see it.Lot of shady characters out there. Its a lot easier buying through a dealer ,so If You are buying privately ,do your homework, especially when you have to pay for something first.

eBay

I bought mine off eBay but it was only 2.5 hours away. I picked it up. I would not buy one sight unseen. I've sold a couple muscle cars to guys across the country just by talking to them on the phone. I don't have the balls for that. I have to pick it up in person.
