Works Shocks ??

Since I've owned the Mastiff I really never thought the rear suspension traveled enough to give even a remotely good ride.Just to stiff to sum it up.
After reading through all the threads on shocks, air conversions, adjustments and so forth...the best direction to go seems to have the original shocks re valved or rebuilt. Has anybody actually ever sent the works shocks back and had this done? And more importantly do you feel it corrected the hard ride?
I weigh 200 lbs. and the rear wheel has never traveled up or down more than an inch. In fact I often think my old rigid road the same. Also, I took off both shocks to check travel and there must be at least 5 to 8 inches of travel with no bind or sticking. Any thought are appreciated, thanks.

I have them on my SG. I like them, but when I got them new I had to send them back to be redone.

If you do anything with them, follow exactly what they say to get the correct info to them.

Then they follow the handy dandy chart they have to build the shocks.

In my case the custom shocks had to be super custom made as they thought that the SG shocks were longer than they were.

I kept telling them they need to be "X" long with me on the bike and they were like it's cool we got it.....well they didn't on the first try. Second one was still too long, but I got the adjustable version and tuned it to what I needed to get the trail correct again for my ride.

Long story short, once I got them the way I like them, they are awesome, until that kind of a pain. But then again they are custom and sometimes custom ain't easy. :bang:

The problem I think is not in the shocks but in the stops. There are rubber stopers that the swingarm hit to bottom out.
On my Chopper theres about 1 1/4 -- 1 1/2 travel before the suspension bottoms out on the stops.
Really dosen't give you much travel but I still think its better than a ridge.

I'm working on an 05 chopper for my wife and needed to drop the rear. I sent the shocks back to Works and they totally rebulit the shocks and added adjustable ends.

This took around 1 month (I told them no hurry) and it was pricey (around $400 adding the ends, etc).

They were good to work with and the shocks did what I wanted them to do.

Tim, the problem isn't that there isn't enough travel, but rather the shocks seem to tight and WON'T travel. It's like the bike was set up for a 450 pound guy.:roll: Are you suppose to be able to sit on the bike and push up and down on the suspension and see the travel?? Honestly a 2x4 would have more give!:roll: It must move, but... Christ ...at such an amount of give it sucks. I did bottom out once and put a mark in the swing arm but this was due to height adjustment. Seem there is no adjustment for tension, hence the question of revalveing?:2thumbs:

Are you saying when you sit on the bike the suspension doesnt move?
Maybe someone will have a better answer for you but on my K9 they work and I've never had to mess with them. I'm 205 lbs and have had people behind me say the rear wheel really works. It would seem to me they need adjusted and that they must be adjusted now for a higher ride height which would make the bike stiffer

From my understanding, the hiegth does have an effect on the stiffness. And to answer your question, there is no travel at a stand still. When i sit on the bike ...it is like sitting on a brick!LOL! There is at least 3in. of travel to the limiters and the same for the reverse travel.
O.K. , I understand that the shock is like a McPherson strut in that the spring and dampening is combined, but still I feel that you should ride in the suspension rather than on top of it. Does this make sense?

NO :loony:

The higher you adjust the stiffer it gets, just like a dick the taller it gets the stiffer it gets. The lower you adjust the softer it gets and you will bottom out if you have a passenger or a fat ass . I am 6' 3" weigh 220 and I have mine (Works Shocks) maxed out in height and they work great with or without a passenger.

just installed air ride on my K9. looks great but I have a leak in the gauge itself. I got the pump and shocks brand new from a dealer that was moving old stock and wasn't a big dog dealer anymore. great deal at $775 shipped.

Let me know how you like it. I have a 09 wolf and I was thinking to put the air shock.

Has anyone purchased a seal kit from Works Performance and repaired there own shocks. Would beat the 4 week turnaround time and 180 buck cost.

Keep in mind that allowing the swingarm to have longer travel may affect the drive belt tension geometry enough to loosen the belt too much under full suspension travel.
