Wont crank consistently

Hey guys,
Im new to big dog ownership here. Got an 04 chopper with a small issue, for now, lol.

When I got o start the bike it wont turnover all the time- sometimes does and starts, sometimes cranks 1-2 times, sometimes not at all.
When it dies it kills power to bike and only way to reset it is to turn off ignition - reset computer - reset run button and try again.
Things so far
Tried new battery but still maybe not big enough - was 220cca when i bought one new they gave me 270cca.
Bike was supposed to have new starter installed when I bought it- had same issue with "old starter"
Shop replaced key switch.
I replaced the button and circuits because they were mushy and I was playing a game to get around that.

Now what ive noticed is when I hit start the voltage drop is a lot! falls until it starts or computer dies (my guess is computer dies under 8.5 volts)
I can feel compression release working. Bike shouldn't be that hard to turnover.

So-
with new battery (even 270cca) -
a new starter (i assume)
new hand control switches installed

Why such voltage drop at start?
Not enough CCA?? too much battery draw
Defective starter??

Or, i read about bad voltage regulator? as it may be responsible for load control???

Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks,
Sam

Get a battery recommended by forum members and get the most CCA possible. Also, expect to replace them on about a 2 to 3 year schedule depending on what battery you bought and its performance when installed. Reduce this time based on your own numbers of starts, length of travel between starts, and tender use. Results may and do vary. Good luck to you. This message might self destruct in 5 seconds. :):):D:rolleyes:

Crank the engine without the spark plugs in it and move the spark away from the hole or the whole house goes up. What does it start like now? Same? Bad grounds to frame. Remember, chemical reaction and a resistance under that cable to frame is back to raw metal contact. It's time. These bikes are in need of a refresh, so says Maggy and her two dangling labium minus.

Does an 04 chopper have a computer or is it still the old style controls? Like mentioned above bigger battery, new cables and clean connections. If the starter is dragging like the bushings are shot send it to Wildsteedworx for a complete rebuild. Good luck.

Thanks for input guys. Im definetly considering the braille battery next. I did however, maybe, stumble onto something last night. I was installing a battery tender and notice the wire/terminal lead on the battery was loose/corroded and actually broke with a few wiggles-

I installed a new connector and put it together and it seemed to fire over 3 times in a row- no issue

The lead went from battery + to the 30A relay - does this make any sense - or is it just coincidence??

Thanks

I think you may have found your culprit!

check anything and everything related to a problem, in this case wires and connections, before you start buying new things. new things don't always do what you think you bought them for.
