Winter refresh project

Found my squeaky rattle. Outer support bearing, on the engine hub, for the OP. I replaced this bearing once and red lock tighted in place, but it still came loose. I guess I'll have to turn it down and put a medal sleeve on it.

I had to shoot some silver paint today, so I decided to run a test piece to try out a new paint product I found. The bike will end up candy green, but I found away to use the black that's on there as a base color, for both the flames and the main color. So I grabbed the lid off my black trash can and gave it a whirl.
I think the candy green will look awesome over this.

Very nice. Is that the Alsa Crazer you are using for that effect? Should look great under the green. Also, no, we didn't get any snow. We got some rain, but southeast and southwest of us got a little. 20 miles north received 5.5" inches and Flagstaff, which is about 100 miles north got hammered.

Hey Bruce, I'm originally from just south of Lake Havasu, between there and Parker. I remember as a kid it snowed there once. And I've seen it hail 2'' deep.
The effect I'm using is call Crystal FX.
All the years of trying to keep shit out of the paint, while I'm painting, Now I'm spraying salt crystals on it to make it look cool. Go figure.

I got a little bit of time on her this morning. Here is a good reason to keep up on you maintenance. Shifter rod end was froze. had to soak it in penetrating oil to get it loose.

Also FYI, anyone that is going to put an OP on, remember this.
Your alternator coils are in oil. I cleaned mine with electro clean, and after my first ride, I thought my new seal went bad. So I pulled it back apart, to find the seal dry. So I cleaned the coils again. Still leaked oil. It finally quit, just remember them coils will hold a lot of oil.

I'm running into town to work on that support bearing spud. I'll post when I'm done.

Ok, if you look back about 5 pictures you will see the bearing spud, for my OP.
I went into the shop today and made a steel sleeve.

Then turned the spud down, and pressed the sleeve on. With some bad ass glue.

Then turned it down so the bearing will fit.

I know there is a few people that are waiting to see how my paint saver ring comes off.
The original PS unscrewed without much fuss. Then I took a long screwdriver, and pried on the inside of the ring, and it peeled right up.

Had a busy day today, but unfortunately not on my bike. I did manage to pull the engine tonight though.

Nice work MrW. Neat to see a rebuild on an 03. I know you mentioned cutting your fender. If you really would rather not have to, Derek and Donna have brand new ones for $99. I bought a spare front and rear and put em on the shelf - just in case.

Thanks Joe, and yes I'm aware of that. I could fix the one I have, I just like to play with different things. Can't get much wetter....excuse me, that's any more wet, riding in the rain, than I get now.
One of the reasons I tear down and rebuild and paint, every couple years is, it is advertisement for me. When I'm out riding, people see things that are different than what's on other people's bikes, and they start asking what I can do for them.
Next year I'll do my wife's bike.

Almost finished tearing her down. Still tied up on OPS.

Had to clear coat a guitar for a kid. made him do the sanding in between coats. It turned out nice.

Also had to paint a gun stock. Got to play with the stuff I'm going to use on my bike. This is charcoal over silver, my bike will be silver over black, with candy green over that.

Allrighty then, here's a few pointers for those who get a wild hair, and decide to sculpt your fender.
First you need ventilation. I used my paint bay and turned the exhaust fan on. I'm sure I'm going to regret it.
Second, you need a respirator, goggles, gloves, hazardous material suit. Damn I hate fiberglass.
I used a diamond cut wheel for my dermal, to cut it, leaving about 3/16'' from my line.

Then I used a barrel sander to take it out to the edge.

And measured it out as I went to make it even all the way around. And I use a small carbide bit to get up in the corners.

My next step will be to spread some kitty hair on the inside of the fender, to give it some strength. Then I'll come back and round all the edges.
