The 631 has a higher duration which may allow cylinder pressure to bleed off jus requiring the higher compression. I also read some where that it is designed to come in around 4000 rpms so I would question lack of low end torque:confused:

I went with a 600 cam!! I really didnt want to mes with the heads BUT if i want to I dont have to buy another cam!!!! anyway it sould be on its way to this warm tropical area I live in!! I am going to try and do a "how too" If I dont fuck it up:confused: just gotta find that camera:bang::2thumbs:

Sounds good. I think I'm going to order one too.

Did you see the color marks the factory uses for the gears?
The pages Ray posted mentions these but I can't see them in your pictures.

Also, where did you get those pins to measure your gears?

it was white, and as for the pins I have no idea:loony: just figured it was a take out put in thing??? I have maybe 10,000mi on the bike and if the gears are that worn then we are all fucked:angry::angry: I was just going to check the lash of the old one v.s. the new 1:2thumbs:

I left the lifter blocks in and used magnets to hold lifters up
i mesured the total length of the cam with shim for old unit and checked new cam
was the same # as per instruction sheet so I did not need to remove lifter block guides
i did check the cam gear with .105 guage pins
This also checked out and did not have to change crank gear
where did you find the .105 gauge pins to do this?
What color were your old gears marked with? Did your new cam have the color marking on the gear?

The S&S pages Ray posted talk about this I'm just curious.

Has anyone changed their lifters while they were in there or see any wear on them at all??

you can take your cams to a shop and have the oem cam gear pressed onto the new cam. that way you have the factory spec'd gear lash.

J&P catalog has the pins listed for $19.95. If you got low miles Marv's suggestion should be the best.

well what gear do they come with then??? if the bike doesnt have very many miles on it why change the gear?? arent the gears all the same from the factory??

That's why I was asking about the color markings. The new cam should have a color marking on it. If your current cam color doesn't have the same color the new cam gear is a different size. If one of the gears doesn't have the marking you need the pins to measure.

Well I guess the question being asked is " Why would they use different size gears?
Is there equipment not capable of producing the same size gear multiple times with out having a variance in production?
Is case and nose cone production not close enough to use the same gear?
If they have oversize or undersize gears why would't QC check this before installation on the cam?

I had a 600 cam I purchased a while back that had no color marking?

It's all about core shift,and the final machining process.
Most cams are shipped with a red cam gear.If you have a red gear on your existing cam,then you should be good to go.
Marv has the best option if the exsisting gear isn't red.
You can press off your stock gear,and install it on the new cam.Very easy.

That is what I did. Put my old gear on the new .600 cam. Stock springs, re-shimmed it and all good!!!!

...and you do not need to pull the rocker boxes. I didn't. 2 hour install tops!!!

sounds good.

Did you check the cam bushing, pinion bushing and lifter bores?
I'm curious cause I haven't heard anyone really mention this

well its in and running!!:) wasnt all that hard although I had help from john sachs:2thumbs::cheers: just have a lil ticky ticky witch I will go thru and fine tune thanks to all that hepled:2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs::2thumbs:

I set the lifters to zero lash then 4 turns and she is ticking like hell im using mobil1 for oil, would it help to only do 3 turns OR.. is it just cuz its 20deg out!!!!!!
