Could it possibly be the ball and ramp outer being loose and the 3 ball bearings flapping a little? Saw those in the manual. Anyone ever had that happen?

ouch

Ok, I pulled the cover to the tranny off and found 3 pieces of what looks like a broken pin. They are about the thickness of a pen tip. I also can take the front middle gear and move it forward and backwards a little bit, maybe a quarter inch or so. Sorry I didn't get back sooner but I was on vacation last week with no computor or big dog. Anyone ever run into this?

Thanks,Cliff.

Cliff,
A pic sure would help. The middle gears are supposed to slide side to side. Look down beside them and you'll see what is called "dogs" that are like a gear that when pressed up against the gear beside it, lock the gear in place. There are a lot more folks on here that know a lot more about the tranny, but I'm sure a picture might help explain what small pieces you are talking about.

A couple of them look like needle bearings but I have not torn into a tranny far enough to know where they would have come from. There are a few guys here that rebuild trannys and should be able to give you better information. When you said you pulled to cover off the tranny and found those pieces, did you mean in the tranny case itself mixed with the tranny fluid?

Brad,
I actually found them on the top of the tranny laying on the flat suface. When I drained the tranny nothing else came out and I used a magnet to dig around and no more pieces came out.
Thanks,Cliff.

Sorry, but still not clear on where you found them. Were they on top of the shift drum? In other words, you removed to top cover of the tranny and these pieces were on top of the drum that sits directly on top of the gears. Right? Wrong? It would be strange that if they were there, that they had not fallen into the gear case. And also, that you found nothing in to bottom of the gear case after finding these just sitting on top. Again, someone will chime in that recognizes where these roller bearings came from, assuming that's what they are.

Yeah Brad, when you take the cover off there is a ledge all the way around the top of the tranny and they were just sitting up on the outside of the tranny. They probably were thrown up there when I was driving home after I heard the noise. There still could be chunks in the basin of the tranny that didn't come out when I drained it. Everything shifts fine when I drove home but it makes a sound as if something is loose or flying around in the case.
Thanks,Cliff.

sounds like an inspect and rebuild tranny. i dont see how you could find the problem and clean all the bits out without a complete disassembly.

Here's a pic of the tranny with the top off. Still trying to get a better idea of where these needle bearings were sitting. Maybe you can describe the area from this pic. You said on a flat surface. The only flat surface I see is where the top bolts to the case. Then, in the center is the black shift drum, but it turns as you shift gears and I wouldn't think they would be on that.

Brad, You are the man to go through this trouble. The ledges where the gaskit lays is where they were found. The gaskit is smaller than the ledge on top of the tranny. If you are looking at the picture the sides to the tranny which would face your legs on both sides is where they were found. The gaskit if I remember was about a half inch wide and the base of the tranny where the gaskit sits on is about 3/4 to a inch wide on the left and right side of the tranny if you were sitting on the bike. They were resting on that.

Thanks again,Cliff.

PM Bobby Shultz (I think that's how his name is spelled) as I have heard that he does rebuilds on trannys and can most likely tell you where these roller bearings came from. Otherwise, contact Baker direct and they'll be able to help. Either way, you need to find/replace the bearing where the needle bearing fell out of.

They look similar to the needle bearings in the throwout bearing... mine went south the other day so I have some laying on the bench. Don't think they could end up under the cover though....?

noise results

Well I pulled the tranny and took it in. The results, another 2005 tranny bites the dust at 11,000 miles. That just doesn't seem right on a tranny from Baker. Thanks for all the help from evreyone trying to diagnose the issue. Also to Bobby Schultz for explaining how to remove it. Should have it back this week and together by the weekend. :spank::bang:

It's par for the course for an '05. BDM changed up a few things, i.e. mainshaft, in the tranny that took away from the quality, much like they did with putting TP rocker boxes on an S&S motor in '05. Keep track of where your tranny shims were located to make for an easy installment. Good luck.

Yeah it sucks, Around $1500 worth. There were two shims and I marked where they go. I think I'm going to double check my gaps after re mounting the trans for a piece of mind. So far my rocker boxes are ok except for the inside around my comp. releases.

Works done

First off thanks to everyone who chimed in for your input and help. I never worked on my own bikes except for routine oil changes. I had the whole back end of the bike torn apart in two hours with the help of this forum. I also had the bike back together in about 4 hours. She runs and shifts like it was brand new and I hope it's good for many years to come. I took my time putting it back together to make sure everything lined up correctly. Once again,a special thanks to Bad Brad, HMAN, narow37 and of coarse Bobby Schultz.:2thumbs:
