Glad I came across this thread!
My bike's kickstand was so sloppy, I too had serious concern of the bike someday falling due to the obvious wear. Even the internal wobble bushing was worn... and to think a BDM mechanic told me the loose kickstand is normal and something I need to get used to! WTH?
I machined a new bushing and went with the "TAB" set-up since it places the weight of the leaning bike, downward against a flat stop which in my opinion is better than using a roll-pin. Roll-pins are made of spring steel and are only strong when they are fully immersed into the metal they are pressed into, otherwise they risk shearing over time (proven in our machine shop). The TAB I made is solid, high quality brass, which is softer than the chromed steel. The brass is the sacrificial piece, not the kickstand anymore. As it wears over time, I can easily replace it with another one. What a positive difference with a snug bushing and the TAB in place. Kickstand stays in place in both up/down positions.
I also fabricated a state inspection sticker plate from 3/16" polished aluminum stock that mounts behind the kickstand just like the member, "badyellowvette" fabricated (it replaces that oval aluminum spacer the factory uses). Pennsylvania prefers inspection stickers to be placed on the left fork tube... nope, not gonna happen here... not even on the downtube either!
