very loud bang from the starter/clutch area

I shut my 07 Chopper off to get gas. When I started it back up, I hit the starter button ( after letting it intialize) and the starter dragged for a second and then there was this very loud metallic bang from the left side starter area. I shut it down, turned the key back on, intialized it, hit the run start button and it started fine. no problem. As I took off the speedo needle didn't work anymore. The tach worked fine as well as the indicator lights. Then I rode for a distance, stopped, shut it down, started it all over again and every thing works fine. The speedo, no more bang. Any ideas what might have caused this? By the way, this is the second time this has happened in the year I have owned it since it was brand new.

No clue, sounds very strange to say the least. By chance was the gas on when you filled it up, just in case the carb flooded and casued it to kick back. I know that is a long shot and to be truthful have not idea. Was it just a bang from like something was jammed! Maybe the ignition got confused and kick back and that may be part of the issue with the Speedometer.

You say it is fine now, how far did you ride it after it occured?

Anyone else have any ideas. Give me a call in later Saturday night if you get shy about riding it or if there is a problem for Sunday.

The EHC needs to be reflashed to cycle the speedo after start up. The voltage drop that occurs during the first "no start" sends the speedo into safe mode and it will not boot up. Also, make sure you have the throttle closed as the comp releases will not engage and this is the loud bang you are hearing. My K-9 does this on occasion and this is what Jason and Brad (BDM techs) told me is the issue. IF it continues to be a problem, I'm going to have it gone over at my local BDM shop. I hope it hasn't sheared any teeth off of the starter ring gear on the clutch pack.

Tim, after talking tomy tech here about it and what Kirk says Ibelieve they are on the right path to this issue. No,I am coming tomorrow. I don't think it's going to fail me. I may have had the throttleopen a tiny bit when I restarted it. I don't knowe for sure. I'll keep an eye on it and we'll see. Other than that it's running great. See you in the morning bro.

the speedo is very tempermental about the electrical voltage that it receives. Have you checked the battery terminals?

hey Too, no but Jason tightened them up at MB so I believe they are ok,. I rode it to work this morning and no problems whatsoever. keeping my fingers crossed but I feel confident it';s ok at this point. See you in the am at the Shell.

I've had the same issue before BigBlue and what I've started doing is when i go to start after stopping is just hit the run and then start without touching the throttle at all depending on how long the bikes be sitting. haven't had the problem so far.

bigbluedog and all the rest. this has been happening to me more and more lately, at least the bang, and what it seems like it is coming down to is a weak battery. sounds hard to believe, but it happens when i have stopped after short rides like between work and someplace for lunch or gas station and the bike has not had enough time to build the battery back up to get it over the compression stroke. it almost seems like the compression is throwing the rotation backwards and slamming the bendix of the starter. yes, when i am not on the bike the tender is but not when i am at work. the battery is almost (2) years old and probably time to replace it with a better one. any thoughts on this possibility???????? :2thumbs:

GUYS, I'M GOING TO PUT A BATTERY TESTER ON IT TODAY AND CHECK THE BATTERY LEVEL. IF IT'S LOW, THEN I'LL GET A NEW 310 CC AMP ONE FROM INTERSTATE. THANKS FOR THE INPUT

Looks like all the bases are covered here...

Remember the battery may show good on a load tester but not be in the dogs. The EHC is tempermental... well at least you can calm it down with the speedo software update to the EHC.. just need to get it reflashed as Kirk said above.

was able to go for a longer ride today, one with enough miles in between stops to recharge the battery from the last crank, and did not have a single "BANG" situation. maybe it is just the low battery. would be a cheap fix, but there again, even with a new battery, the situation would soon return with short rides. need to start riding more and working less!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
