TRANSMISSION WOES

I have an 05' Chopper with just 5000 mi on the odometer. Okay, my transmission started to have issues like other three weeks ago. I adjusted the clutch but after a 200 mi ride I had to re-adjust the clutch again. On the ride the bike would creep while the clutch was pulled in and jump when I put it in first after start up. I took the bike in to a local dealer to have it check and they told me the clutch looks good but the seal between the transmission and primary has gone bad. Apparently trans fluid was leaking into the primary so he will take care of that call me back after the test ride. The bike runs like wild beast except for the transmission problem, what could cause the transmisson problem?

When I first start up my bike and put the tranney in first it will jump. That is the only time it does it so I ignore it.

Sounds like a possible clutch basket problem or a bad cable that stretching ... time to pull the primary cover and take a look see. While your at it pull off the drive pulley cover and check the clutch actuator and clutch rod. Could be the throughout bearing .. lots to check. As for the initial jump when its cold this seems to be the norm for the dogs. Good Luck!

You've got the 05 clutch carrier issue.

It's a broken clutch hub most likely if it's creeping when in gear and it clunks really hard into 1st. Pull it apart and inspect the clutch hub.

It's a known issue with BDM 05 year models. Call customer service and, they should send you one free of charge but, I'd bet you'll have to pay to have it installed or install it yourself.

The initial 'jump' when first shifting into gear is the dog's way of saying get this f***ing leash off me and let me run!

(honestly I dont know why they do that, mine does a bit but not bad)

agree with everyone

my bike used to jump on that first gear change real bad - a new clutch rod helped with this and the Bandit has got rid of it altogether

It looks like a new clutch is the cure for the problem. I was thinking of going to an open primary but I have read a different thread on this forum where members have switched over to open primary and are have problems. What gives?

Let me say thanks for all the input/suggestions and add a little more insight to this thread. I had changed all the fluids after four months of storage, road it four time and did not have any problem with shifting until a month later when I took it for a run to Yosemite. I adjusted the clutch thinking it needed adjustment but was still having problem with the bike creeping, hard shifting, finding neutral an so forth. From reading the threads, I thought it might be the bearing carrier or hub so off to the dealer I go. Before dropping the bike at the dealer, I called Big Dog Customer Service Department about this and they told me to take it to the dealer and they would take care of it.

The mechanic got into the primary and pulled the clutch. He said the clutch was fine and the only problem was a leak in the transmission seal. He told me that tranny fluid was leaking into the primary and little was left in the tranny case which cause the creeping, hard and miss shifting but no damage too the tranny. A day later the dealer called and told me that they will take care of the seal if I did not mind paying for it and take care of all the recalls. They also told me that Big Dog was willing to upgrade my old tach for the newer tach at no cost to me. Mind you my bike has been out of warranty for a year so hats off to Big Dog.

I just got the bike from the dealer today and it ran like a champ. I put over a hundred mile today and with out any problems. Life is good.:D

For those who are still having problem with their clutch and tranny, Brothers, I feel your pain.:( I hope things will work out for you.
