That's craptastic Neil.

Do you think with the more recent upgrades, the torque brace, and maybe a OBS will do the trick??

What kind of power you putting down now?

I would say, you neeed the baker open belt primary for Big Dogs. It was made for these bikes. I have install alot of these open belt primaries to the bike I have added horse power to....I wouldn't add torque and horse power to their bikes, unless they would commit to buying this open belt from baker. If not, I would not do it.... just for reason, they would shorten the life of their traansmission. Lets say.... all kinds of different kinds of problems with their transmission.

Got my transmission back this morning and put the bike back together again. Took it for a short shake down and put fresh fuel in for tomorrow.
I feel like this again....

Neil, what upgrades were put in by Baker on this re-build, I'm curious to here if it was anything significant

Neil, You are correct on 3rd gear is where the problem starts. That is where they switch from a straight cut gear to a heli gear cut and it starts to side load the trans. Been through this way too many times ...9 times out of 10 it is the cause of the problems that we have with these transmissions at my shop.

As the heli gear pushes to the side the only thing that holds it in place is the input/output shaft bearings! BAD IDEA:bang: One ,its the reason the bearings take a dump due to excessive loading, and two it also causes the shaft that the gears are on to flex!
That is also the reason that with the stock clutch setup that the clutch will start to slip in 3rd,4th gear on up when the input shaft bearings start to get play in them. The diaphram spring does not need to be pushed much before the clutches slip.
Some of the better clutches out for these bikes such as the bandit etc will mask the problem for awhile as they have more spring adjustment before the're is so much play in the bearings that it overcomes the springs on the clutch and the clutches can no longer hold.

It is a issue in the baker DSSC. Side loading, nothing to hold the gears from pushing to the side, gear set shaft that flexes due to the extreme side loading, and only the bearings to hold the internal assy together that is what you get. If you just take a look at your gears Im sure that you will see the side loading on the #3 gear set. If the trannys would have had a straight gear set 1-6 instead of just the 1-2 gears this would not be a problem.

BTW this also causes another problem due to the shaft walking and that is the input shaft seal takes a beating. Ever get primary fluid in your trans? :bang::angry: Well that is due to bearings going south, that have to take the loads of the heli gears pushing from 3rd gear on,that in turn make the shaft flex... You get the pic by now Im sure.

Call me sometime as Im working on a fix for this . I have contacted baker a few times and explained how many big dog trannys I have at my shop and its always the same failures due the the bearing at the input shaft/output shaft.
The gear failure you have is a direct result of it.

I'M no gearmatician, but is there any way to build some sort of thrust washers to keep the load off the bearings/ seals??

Neil ,
As others before me posted -the problem Is twofold :
The Helical to Straight cut 3rd gear construction which causes shaft pressure side to side and the bearings suffer and you are running/Producing MORE Horsepower & Torque than the DSSC Primary & Clutch & RSD6 Transmission was meant to handle reliably.
And the BAKER Synchronous belt drive is a much stronger unit as another member mentioned-but that wont solve the transmission issues -since that transmission wasn't designed for high H.P. & Torque applications.
You just have too much H.P. & Torque for the cruising/quite RSD6 that your bike was designed and built with.
I also see that your running a belt still...???

Sorry to hear of all your past aggravation with your BAKER transmission -hopefully you'll get more miles outta it with better luck in 2012.
The Solution for YOU is to buy a BAKER RSD Torquebox and FFF Function Formed Primary and the BAKER King Kong Klutch .
NO reliability issues in that setup at all (gimme a call if you need to speak w/me for details about it)

It's what I'm running in my 155 C.I. Pitbull . Before winter set in here in CT it ran 10:23 on pump gas with a single S&S G carb.

Thanks Vince81 and Bobby.....
I know what the issue is with the DSSC units and have worked with Baker on my options. I am going to install a torque box but not in this build. Vince81, yes I am on a belt still and have snapped one already. I converted this bike, 2007 Bulldog EFI, to a wide band system for my build and use a Thundermax ECM now. John Sach did my valves, porting, milling, springs and head work and so on setting it up for me to run my Red Shift 656V2 cam.
For a big lead sled it runs pretty good.....
This is why I am going to build another bruiser so I will lay off of this Bulldog until I decide what to do with it.....
Good info from everyone, and thanks.
Baker has been truthful more than helpful on my issue and has worked with me more than I can say right now. I am neither aggravated or in the belief there products are anything but top notch and awesome from Baker and I am exceeding the BDM spec they asked Baker to do for them.....
Before I spend a ton on this BDM to resolve the transmission issue, I know down deep I rather build another bike with 250mm or less rear tire than the 300mm I am running now......
This one is a hoot though....
It has been called a crotch rocket in a V-Twin numerous times....
Vince81, I will give ya a call sometime though.... I like the way you think...
