Transmission went boom crunch crunch crunch

Went for a ride and hit a hill that turned into 2 lanes going up and dropped it into 3rd and hit it. Heard a boom and 3rd gear was gone. Had the the other gears for what it was worth, just not 3rd. I guess that Metzler 300 is good stuff..lol
Do I win a prize?
Had Baker build the transmission in 05/09 and then again in 09/10. Made it to 10/11 this time....
Called Scott and told him what happened and sent it in today.
I believe I know what the weak link is.

2009, 2010, and now 2011. I detect a pattern here! Maybe you should drop the 200 shot of NITROUS!!!!!! :2thumbs:

Seriously though, do you think these tranny's are not robust enough to handle the HP or is every one of your shifts a full throttle hole shot????

Best of luck beefing that thing up!!!

Man that sucks. I wonder if there is something inherently wrong with the whole unit? Other than the weak link.:(
What parts let go in the first two rebuilds?

what oil you running in your tranny?
I run the Spectro 6 Heavy Duty Platinum Plus

According to someone I spoke to a while back they are not. They were designed I was told for about 100hp before they start failing and designed to be quiet, not robust.

Damm Neil ... your going on your 3rd rebuild ... hope you get her back on the road soon ...
Actually unfortunately, it will be my 4th rebuild. Big Dog rebuilt it once and it lasted just over 100 miles before 3rd gear went and Baker got it the first time.

When BDM rebuilt it, it would fall out of 3rd gear when you accelerated.
Baker put in some performance dogs to hold it in gear and a general rebuild.

Next time riding 2 up it went out and everything went fubar. Completely redone at a tune of $1,306.00.
They kept it a while seeing how I asked them if some straight cut gears could be put in. In the end, no. I was told they was not enough clearance in the case. I asked them if we could revisit on beefing it up. 3rd gear seems to be where the trouble starts and implodes everything.
I guess I could de-tune the bike but that seems to be going in the wrong direction. I wanted a bike to run as good as it looks.
I was also told to convert to a Harley softail transmission and whatever modifications it would take because it would hold up to the power.
I guess I need to starting thinking hard about what it takes to hold this machine together and bite the bullet one way or the other.

Will a different brand of transmission bolt in the 05 and later bikes? I didn't think it would?
I'm in the process of puttin mine back in the bike as well 5000 miles and no big mods just a cam and carb.

You know Marv I started doing that a year or so ago and laid out part of it. Bought some clay to make a preliminary mold of the motor case but got lazy and stopped working on it. Already have someone to cut it out and ask me occasionally if we are still going to do it. When I get the transmission back I will finish this project.
Kick myself in the ass. Because I never did this is the only reason I have not taken it to the Harley drags and run it or take it out to the track to play with it cause I was afraid of busting the inner primary from the flexing.
Live and learn from my past mistakes...

Have you looked into polishing and a cryogenic treatment on the gears? I agree that building a support would be beneficial. That would be a fairly simple deal for a good fabricator.

No I have not Vegas....
When I spoke to Baker and asked them if the support would of prevented this from happening, he said no. The gears are separating in the case for reasons they explained. I will still make a support to keep other issues from taking place. I did go talk to a bike fabricator here in Clarksville which also owns a machine shop about making one seeing how I have dragged me feet on it. When I get it back together I will cross that bridge.
The DSSC transmission was designed for a whole another purpose for BDM per there spec's. To hold a load of torque and power beyond the original build was not one designs it was meant for.
Baker has made some significant upgrades in the last year or so and they are going to incorporate them into the transmission which should make it more robust.
