Transmission bearing gone bad at input shaft.

:bang:Well I was enjoying the look and sound of my new Karata belt drive when I noticed some aluminum shavings comming out of the rear. I pulled it all back off only to find out the the input shaft bearing has gone bad and I had excessive play on the shaft. First I want to say this was not caused by the belt drive as I have heard some noise in the trans prior to installing it and did a fluid change hopping it would improve and quiet down...It did not.

So I got the trans off and now I need to replace the input shaft bearing.
The gears etc all look to be fine. Any idea on where to get the bearings and seals??? Part numbers would be great.

BTW didn't someone on here rebuild these things??? I want to ride again!:choppersmiley:

Two members on here: Andrew (bigdogtech1) or Scott (Scott@Baker) are our trans specialists, might want to contact them...:2thumbs:

Had the drive pulley back off on my K-9 just recently. Talked to Baker on the phone and they got me the parts sent out very quickly and at a very reasonable price (Great Tech dept).

If you fix it yourself or get Baker or Bigdogtech1 to do it, I would highly recommend getting the parts directly from Baker (you'll get them cheaper & faster / stay away from dealer or BDPP mark-ups).

Thanks for the input :) Im hopping I may be able to get the bearings at a local bearing dist.
On a different note wat is the deal with the bearings going out at at 14K!!! Does baker offer a upgraded bearing or maybe a double roller bearing set to help hold the torsonal load at the input shaft???

Scott? BDtech??

I do believe there is a better bearing out there and also while you're there, you might want to inquire about the improved output shaft. Several members have snapped the shaft, claymation is going through a main shaft replacement now. Just a thought, since you're getting ready to repair the trans...

You should look into the new Main Shaft for sure. It's costly but worth it if you want to keep riding it. Plus in my mind it's a huge safety issue. That thing locks up on you at 70mph it could be a very bad deal.
As far as bearings go. No, Baker will not do any upgrade. They will only sell you what they use in them and that is FAG ( made in Canada or Korea) You can have the numbers crossed over to get SKF's. SKF is one of the best bearings that money can buy. If you want to spend big bucks, have the bearing shop look into getting you some ceramic ones. They will probably cost you close to $100 a piece though :D
SKF part numbers for the outer bearings are...
SKF 6209JEM
SKF 6304JEM
If you don't want to do the work yourself then feel free to send it to me. I can rebuild it in a days time and then send it back to you. Via UPS it's around $35 ground. Shipping weight is 40 lbs.

Andrews great at rebuilding these transmissions and a quick turnaround. I would highly recommend him if you don't wanna do it yourself

Mine went bad at 5k mi, two weeks before Daytona 08.
Yup, i have seen them go at 3500 miles and some at 20k miles. The problem with the low grade earings is that, well..they are low grade..lol . Made with low quality materials and the machining is not the same that of SKF, Timkin, INA...FAG is just not a good bearing.
My .02 cents :D

Dont mind to rebuild myself as I try to do all my own work :2thumbs: But I need to get my hands on the parts.
BDtech thanks for the bearing numbers :)

Anyone know if any double row ball bearings, roller bearings, or even radial tapered roller bearings would fit or have even been thought about? I know that a regular ball bearing is not the best at handling loads that pull it to one side ...like the belt or chain does under load

I guess I need to get the other parts from baker like the seals, end cap seal, new style shaft...But any chance from another source?

Pricing on shaft?

Thanks guys:cheers:

The main shaft bearing is a double row ball type. The counter is not. Your limited on space so I doubt anything avail. As far as the seals go. you should be able to take the old out and have the numbers taken from them and see if the guys getting you the bearings can also get you the seals. Otherwise, your stuck with getting them with Baker. I want to say the MS is around $200
Good luck.

Thanks, good to know it is a double row style at least. I will give the skf bearings a try and hope they hold up better than the stock ones.
