TP to S&S Boxes?

Ok OK, so my time has come after 23.000 miles, my TP rocker boxes are leaking and I am thinking about swapping to the much uglier S&S boxes. What cost, parts, and work is involved in doing this?

Back in the day when BDM Parts were in stock at most dealership, I called Aaron McFarland at Full Throttle Motorsports, Inc. in Lansing Michigan and order the following.

1. BDM100-00083 Rocker Box set $511.66
2. BDM100-00081 Roller, Rocker arms $408.46
3. BDM100-00080 Shaft, Rocker Arm $ 27.48
4. 103-000067-00 Kit, Gasket Top end $ 94.56
5. BDM100-00414 Front Tappet Gasket $ .86
6. BDM100-00416 Rear Tappet Gasket $ .86

Just a little over one grand with Tax and shipping.

You may be able to bet them from Derek at a better price.

I would say;

S&S rocker covers
rocker arm supports
hardware
gaskets and o rings
roller or normal rockers and shafts

Then your valve guides might be worn out because of the old setup.
Heads have to come off to be checked and possibly be fitted with new guides and maybe seats etc.... So you will need new head and cylinder gaskets as well.

I would also consider installing quicky push rods and new hydraulic lifters.

Lets hear what other people have to say.

Paul.

Agree! Headwork should be done with having that many miles. Typical quality rework will run you around $500. Anything less you will pay twice. Boxes are retail for $600 now and you will need all other parts and pieces to go along with it. Total without labor will run you nearly $2000 if you want it done correctly.

Most likely you got a deal from Andrew. At full retail of the web you are looking as follows to do a complete top end rework using stock bore...
S&S rocker box kit $600
S&S roller rocker arms $480
S&S standard rocker arms $260
S&S rocker arm shafts $38
Rework S&S heads $550
S&S piston ring set $40
S&S rocker box gasket kit $ 52
S&S topend gasket kit $79
S&S tappets $260
S&S lower end gasket kit $28

Total $1907-$2127 + Labor

WOW that is a lot of money! Where you anywhere close to that Franco? I am going to leave my TP's alone until, I can do it all at once, that is a big list and a whole lot of money. Plus in addition I would add my cam and cut the jugs since how you already have to pull them anyways.

As Beast said, I got a good deal from Andrew. I strongly recommend everybody who wants some work done on his Big Dog to contact him... nothing to lose.

Why not just replace the gaskets on your tp heads. That what I did have been fine, did about 15000 miles ago. Took about 4 hours because I took my time and cost about $40.00 for gaskets. If it is running ok you do not need head work etc. I have over 40000 miles no issues

Prolly find valve guide damage at a minimum. If you keep riding you may have to replace an exhaust seat or 2. Like taxes, It will happen. :bang:
Your stock adjustable push rods will work fine. DON'T piss money away on quick installs.
I have a set of heads in the works now.
John
Seat and guide damage.

That is a very good option actually. Despite all the negativity on TP boxes, they have worked, and still works, great for me. Who has those gaskets needed?

All you have to do is remove your rocker assembly and look at the top of your valve stems. If the wear pattern is centered and clean your good. If its out of center, or worse yet an hour glass shape, then you need to replace them.

John, with that much misalignment and damage wouldn't the engine be running like crap?
It's kinda like cancer. Starts out no noticeable symptoms, grows into problems, and then the shit hits the fan. :bang:
The picture I posted is from a customer's TP boxed cylinder head who drove in this summer to have performance upgrades done. Said he just went on a quick trip to Key Largo the weekend, and the bike was running ok.
As soon as I removed the exhaust valve spring I knew there were problems.
I find a lot of owners DON'T know if their bike is running right.( Some of the pipes, carbs, and air cleaners I see on these things make me laugh).
2 weeks later Trotta brought me a similar looking head off of another TP equipped Dog. That picture is also somewhere on this forum. Valve guide disintegrated, bent valves, etc.

if the motor is running right, i agree with Bruce, just change out the gasket. i have tp with no issues. gasket is alot cheaper than $2000-2500
