throttle handlebar controls loose

My throttle side controls are loose on the handlebar. While holding the grip, I could lift up and the whole control would move about an 1/8th of an inch. The allen screws were tight. I just took the brake apparatus off, and see that the throttle assembly has a shaft that inserts into the handlebar. That is what is moving up and down - the shaft that goes into the handlebar. This did not happen until I broke the brake lever, and had Rockstar replace it. The small movement doesn't seem dangerous, but it also isn't right, and I am curious as to why it is moving and how to tighten it up. The allen screws on the brake assembly just tighten the brake up onto the handlebar, but do not eliminate this "lift" caused by the shaft going into the handlebar that moves.
Does anyone know how to tighten this up so that the throttle/brake assembly does not move on the handlebar?

maybe remove the control and place tape on the "shaft" until it eliminates the wobble when you replace it in the handlebar.

Check the controls set screw. There is one on each control

No set screw. the barss have a notch which should prevent the controls from turning and it's held on tight by the screws that hold the 2 piece of control together. There are 4 screws on the controls.

IIRC, BDM had some problems with some of those bars (especially the stainless steel ones). I can't remember what the issue was, but you might contact them maybe they would take care of you even though you're out of warranty. I've read about lots of folks that have been taken care of even though they were out of warranty.

I don't have that problem Gas because I have aftermarket bars with the tabs and my controls don't move. I would try tightening up the 4 screws so the 2 piece controls will tighten up on the bars.

Yeah... maybe its back then to putting some type of rubber under, as wood said, the controls to help take up some of the extra space or looseness.

I stopped at Rockstar and learned the following: the bars are 1 1/4"; the controls ride on a 1" insert shaft. It is that 1/4" that is creating the movement, as the 1" shaft rocks up and down inside the bar. Rockstar suggested I replace the bars. I have a call into BDM consumer services hotline; we shall see what they say. I have no idea how to fix this one, but hopefully BDM has a solution. It doesn't appear dangerous at this moment, but I suppose theoretically the shaft could pull out of the bar.

The story is that the 1" insert into the handlebar is welded into the bar. The weld is broken, and I have to replace the handlebars. Good info from MC Warehouse in Delran, NJ and thanks to him for helping diagnose the problem.
Could have been dangerous, as the insert w/ the controls could have slipped out into my hand while riding.

If just the weld is broke... should be able to repair for cheap.

re-weld and then re-chrome. a little bit of downtime. use caution pulling the wires out.

But if the weld is under the controls, and the welder is decent... shouldn't need to rechrome... tape off, rattle can some paint on the weld so it don't rust later and drip nasty water... re-assemble and go.

Your bars may have been made by Carlini at least the 03's were. You may want to contact them and see if they will send you a new set!
