Thanking the Road Angels

Sometimes we need a good as it could be story. Started a trip with a buddy Sunday heading from Dallas to KC. We were making good time going up 35 until just North of Wichita. I was on the Fat Boy and he was on his Vulcan 1600. We still don't know what happened, but he was behind me coming around a truck when he lost it. He somehow rode the wall about 100 yards or more until he hit a drain culvert. That threw him down. First bit of good luck was he went away from the truck. Second bit of good luck was the car right behind him was a State Patrol who is also a rider. All told, the bike is pretty messed up. But out of it all, he only has a a little road rash on his arms and a broken finger. Helmet saved his head. Then out of the goodness of their hearts, my wife and her best friend put everything, including job, aside for the day and drove all the way from Dallas to Emporia, KS with the truck and a second car so they could get the bikes. We have to go on for work, and they took the bikes back to Dallas today. He is sore, but otherwise fine. THANKS TO THE ROAD ANGELS FOR KEEPING THE BAD GREMLINS AWAY:)

Holy crap, what on earth happened that he just "lost it"????

Glad he wasn't injured bad.
Still don't know. He had the bike checked out before we left. Something didn't get tightened? Nasty wind gust? He knows how to handle that. He said the bike started coming left and wouldn't respond when he tried to lean into it. Next option was the wall. Gottat tell ya I feel like crap. I know there was nothing I could have done, but still...

And don't go beating yourself up. There's absolutely nothing more you could've done. Bottom line is you were there for your friend either way. :2thumbs:

Good to hear of the positive outcome!
Your Road Angels are damn fine Angels!:2thumbs:

The wind turbulance can move a passing Semi around and a bike may have issues as described.

Glad everything turned out as well as it did.:2thumbs:
Drove truck for many years and we can do nasty things with
the wind. A good reminder to all to be very careful around trucks.

just a follow up note that may lead to a PM I will look at. My buddy was riding a '06 Kaw Vulcan 1600 which overall seems to be an OK bike. Once all settled down, he took a better look at the bike and pulled the bars off where he found one of the balls in the upper steering bearing was missing. Obviously been apart before, but why??? Did some reading online and found complaints of the lower bearings on those bikes rusting out with no indication until taken apart. Symptoms included weaving during sweeping turns. Neeless to say, he doesn't trust the bike anymore and has donated the remains to charity. May not be a bad idea to check the bearings/grease in the triple.
