My opinion, well synthetic oil's are made by the big guys,so,is it as good as they claim, they want you to keep buying and once you start w/ syn,to my understanding, you have to keep using it ………I just turned 1500 miles on my bike which is way way out of warranty, next oil change going to add some Lucas,I thought about Amsoil but,Too much thinkin, not enough drinkin. My opinion's usually suck so I'll shut up now,Later:cheers:

Been runnin' Mobil 1 V-twin synthetic in my HD heritage springer for a lot of miles and now using it in my 107 S&S (custom chopper). NO problems and performance is good.

My buddy (has a '04 BD chopper) uses it in his and he has a 124 S&S in it with a lot of performance enhancements. He swears by it and I thought he told me that Mobil 1 is the recommended oil by BDM (Am I wrong??).

Is extra expense really worth it?? I would like to know.

SYN OR NOT TO SYN

Talked to Nelson at WB cycles he says the people at big dog said no syn oil on my bike but its also an 03 I dont know if this changes for the newer bikes or not. Wonder what happens if I did decide to run the synthetic oil anyway??

Mobile 1 for me. Syns run cooler and we need all the help we can get in that department.

I plan to use the synthetic now that I got 5000 since my "re-breakin" after my engine work...

I have seen a lot of recommendations to wait at least 3000 miles for the full break in.

Supposed to run cooler and smoother; but more susceptible to leaking, and more top end noise?

Dino for me..it's not worth the trouble to change when it's not broke and I have never had one problem with my three S&S engines running good old 20w50 Texas tea.

My buddy owns a trailer company. He uses diesel trucks (light duty, duramaxes, strokers, cummins etc.) and runs amsoil in every one. He changes the oil every 25k (he delivers trailers all over hell and back) and has NEVER HAD AN ENGINE FAILURE THAT'S OIL RELATED SINCE HE SWITCHED TO SYNTHETIC. Bottom line, it lubricates better, HD it just pissed because Mobil 1 won't private label it for them..what do you think you're getting in that Harley bottle...I'd bet it's pennsoil or something of the like.

Run synthetic and for christsakes put this damn argument to rest! IT's BETTER! PERIOD.

I don't have any leaks Cutty.....and not really that much top end noise either...but my rockers and heads were changed out also...its quieter now then it was before:up:

when is the acceptable mileage to turn to syn? got about a 1000 miles on mine and wanted to make the change to help with the temp. my buddies 04 chopper dropped 18 degrees with the change!

if you are still under warranty, do what the manual says so they can't deny you if you have a claim. otherwise, on the 2500 mile seems to be the norm. :2thumbs:

Good advise.

I was just passing along what I got from BDM guys. Run Synth in my F150 and have in all my metrics prior to the dog. Run HD now in it and all warranties up for me in December.

I agree with Pro to do it whenever - except for the warranty thing

as for the 3000 mile breakin period I do believe that too is a load of bollocks - again simply there to protect warranty - I put synth in mine as soon as I got it at 2300 miles and have not had any problems. Whether it had synth in it before then I don't know.

As for the 3000 mile breakin thing - S&S say the breakin period is 1000 miles - now I know a BDM S&S might be different to a regular S&S engine from S&S but if what they (BDM) do to it (TP rockers / taller cylinders etc etc) triples the breakin period then alarm bells should be ringing real loud

RIDE IT HARD!!!
Not true about once you run synthetic you can't go back. The thing with synthetic oils is they never loose their viscocity. So if you can filter it well enough to keep it clean you can vertually run it forever. The problem is keeping it free of dirt, fuel and water contamination. If you could do that, you could just change filter, top off and you'd be good to go.
