Hi everyone,
Quick intro: My name is Fred, I bought a second hand 2004 Bulldog.
It's a pretty rare bike over here in Belgium, as far as I know I am the only BD owner in the country, which is nice but also a bit problematic as there is very little knowledge of the bike in the local shops...
Recently I have had a few tuning problems that have made the experience somewhat less enjoyable.
I have tried finding someone that could take a look but most of the local shops are afraid of the mighty 107 S&S engine and say that the super G is not adapted to the variations of weather that we have over here, some want to sell me a mikuni carb.
I would love to learn how to tune the bike myself, would save time and money...
I have read Gasman's post on carb tuning, and I have followed the instructions for the idle mixture screw, I only ever use the enrichener to start the bike when absolutely necessary and take it off immediately, I run stock harley plugs, can't find anything else over here.
But I'm still getting the same problem, the bike runs fine between 1000 -2750 but it starts hesitating and coughing thru the filter as I open the throttle more than 1/3. When the bike is cold, if I open the throttle a little more it actually catches and accellerates but as it warms up it eventually stops going over 3000 rpm altogether.
Most of my trips are less than 10 miles, but the other day I took the bike on a longer trip to a shop to get the plugs changed and it magically ran fine for a few miles just before getting to the shop. The plugs were changed at the shop (front cylinder completely black and back cylinder dark brown) On the first few miles back from the shop it ran fine but then the stuttering started again.
I adjusted the mixture screw according to gasman's guide but it did'nt make a difference, I took the new plugs out and again the front one was completely black and the back one chocolate, I also took the air filter off and noticed that the filter element is very oily...
Any help greatly appreciated, this is driving me mad...
