Sticking shift

'05 Chopper
When the bike gets hot (normal running temp) the shifting starts sticking.
I have to use my toe to pull the shifter back so I can then shift down.
Its like stuck forward. This gets old really fast. Love the bike but this is not good. I've adjusted the shifter and its works fine up until I've ridden 8-10 miles.Does anyone else have this and if so hwo to fix?

clean and lube your heim joints on the shifter linkage or completely replace the joints with some that have brass inserts. they are notorious for sticking.

Yup - classic problem with the heim joints. Next time it sticks, reach down and rotate or fiddle with the shift bar. You should be able to wiggle it free, and that would identify the problem. Lube 'em liberally, or replace them.

don't use a wet lube like wd40. try to use a dry lube like cable life or a little bit of graphite. wd40 will just attract dust faster.

replace heims ....bought 2 new oem ones 10 bucks total. cheapest part i have bought for my dog

mine just needed lube in the foward control area. heim joints were fine

I had the same issue. Big Dog replaced my hiem joints in Myrtle Beach and smooth as glass ever since. Do your self a favor, get them replaced no matter if you buy them or BDM does, you'll feel a lot better once it's done.

I had the same problem last summer.....my dealer replaced my heim's ....under warranty haven't had a problem since....

My '05 did the same thing this weekend. Like the others said, lube or replace and you are back in business. Any clutch issues?

No clutch issues. I libberally cleaned with WD40, then lubed with lithium.
Shifted extremely smooth. If this comes back, I'll replace.

asked about your clutch since i fought mine for a while till i replaced with the bandit set up. night and day difference.

I had that problem - heim joints fine - forward controll had "zero" grease in it. Lubed it and good to go since then.

Woodbucher - I've done all kinds of searches and cannot locate or find male hiem joints. Harely only sells the female heim joint. I ordered a chrome plated one from JEGs and it was stiffer than my existing problem joint. Tech Supt said thats how they are - more for automotive applicaiton. So...where can I get these for my Chopper? Thanks
