starter plunger spring?

I had an issue over the weekend where after starting my bike,it stalled,I tried to start it again and got the "click".Battery registered 13.3 V's,Now when it stalled I hit the start button,before the click I heard a funky noise at the starter,So I pulled out the plunger to make sure the contacts were clean only to find the plunger spring snapped,only about 1/4 inch piece,I was able to stretch out the remaining piece to work,for now,with all that ,I'm guessing from the spring snapping,somehow my starter relay crapped out,I was able to get a replacement for that.
Is there an underlying issue that I should look for that may have caused the spring to snap or is that something that can just happen??,,,Good thing I was not out on the road,I'm going to be getting one of them slam buttons as insurance.

I found my broken too when I installed the slam button.
My bet is, who ever opened it before didn’t disconnect the battery before. You have to do that, there is currency in there even if it turned off from the key. If the spring now touches the ground and hot, it will melt like a fuse. Result is broken spring.
I did order a new spring from J&P -it is not correct. But I got a replacement from a local shop, they just took it from a broken starter they had lying around. Check those.

Well T,I have been in there before to check the contacts,and prob.did not disconnect the batt.,so that makes good sense,are there any starter(caused)issues that I should look or be aware of that can cause this?,Again you may be on to something with your response,Thanks!!

As I have said before, I know shit. I have just learned something standing behind one who does, looking over his shoulder asking stupid questions… The battery can be bad, even if it shows nice “rest” voltage. Can you check how low the voltage drops when trying to start, that would give you an idea whether the battery is any good.

Hope somebody who actually knows something steps in...

Dude,I appreciate your input,thanks.I'm open to suggestions,just trying to find out if anything else(major)could cause that spring to break,your ans.is a very good possibility,just want check all bases.

I've never seen one break, I'd just replace it and keep on trucking. Not much that could go wrong in there, it's pretty simple.
