Starter Issue??

Energy One
Recently, I removed my bike from winterization and found a big problem. When I tried to start the bike, all I heard was the compression release kick and that was it. Per the suggestion of a bike tech at KC Creations, I replaced the EHC. Now, I hear what I believe is the engine start to crank but it stops quickly. Is this a bad starter now? My bike started without problems prior to putting it away for the cold Kansas Winter..I just have a hard time believing that things have gone south so fast. Please Help!! Thanks for the time. Hub

strange that they would jump to the EHC first.. Kind of a pricey guess.. Think simple.. chk all battery connections pos and neg. also chk the other end of the neg cable @ the starter bolt.. Do any lights work? or what else doesn't work ie blinkers, high beam etc..

Oh yea Welcome to the Pound...

The first thing to check would be the battery... did you leave it on a battery tender and is it fully charged? Techs who do not know what they are doing like to blame the EHC for everything...they think it is vodoo in a box or something. A battery will go bad, especially if is not charged or on a tender over a cold winter. Check there first, and then go from there.

Good luck, and welcome to the site. We have an introduction thread...please hit that and show us some pics of your bike!

starts to crank?

Does it turn over and then shut off. Or do you just here it cranking?
What about gas. How long did it sit for? After checking all your electrical does your carb get gas? are you getting a spark from the plugs?

If its cranking I don't think its the starter.

lights all work fine. After a few tries, both turn signals started flashing. I haven't charged the battery in a while and I had the all leads just held to the posts with the bolt, no nut. thank you for your help. Beautiful bike!!!

When I hit the start, the bike just starts to crank like for a second then stops. it doesn't crank over at all. Thanks for your time.

When the blinkers flash it means the battery isn't giving the starter the power it wants. Check that battery! needs to be 12.8 volts sitting and if it won't hold that charge its JUNK! Replace with a new AGM for a softail.

And then smack yourself for going to KC FUCKTATIONS! They FUCK'ed you for that pricey EHC! That would have been the last thing that needed to be replaced. I hope you kept the old one, cause its probably fine!

If it ends up not being the battery or cables I would check the starter itself.

Kim Suter (owner, KC Creations) does not have a very good reputation among those in the know here on the site...I am not dogging his techs, just talking about how he does business...from what we have heard anyway. We do not profit from your troubles, and are only here to help. A starter (or an EHC) should not go bad over the winter when it is not being used...but a battery sure will. Let us know what happens, and how you come out,. We will help any way we can. Good luck!

agreed, agreed ,agreed and agreed some more - probably a good time to also change your spark plugs and oil. Here is a quote re recommended plugs from the S&S site

S & S has used the following spark plugs in V2-Style Long Blocks with good results: Autolite 4265, Champion RN12YC, Harley-Davidson 5R6A, and NGK BPR 4ES

Kim, might have fixed it under warranty. We don't know the whole story. He could be trying to screw BD with warranty work. If Thor did pay for that EHC, then Kim was trying to screw him.

This sounds so much like a dead battery problem. Just my 2 cents.

Sounds like the battery, same thing happened to me. I religiously keep the tender on her now. As for KC Creations, kinda expected that response. Must be tryin to make up for the lost bizz from The Vickie thing. Serves them right.
