Preparing for a 1200 mile ride
...has anyone expereinced issues when riding in the rain with the spike filter? Can water get in?

Well when you get back let us know:choppersmiley: Someone on the site has to know the answer...it's the monsoon season in the Rockies, so the chances of me testing the theory are very good.![]()
I don’t have a spike but a one off open K&N and as Jake we ride in the rain all the time here in South Florida. I haven’t hade any problems yet…:2thumbs:I had a Spiked D&M on my 2004 Ridge and got caught in numerous downpours and never had an issue. I searched all over at that time for the nylon prefilter and nobody was offering them. As long as the element is oiled up good it should repel the water just fine. If the filter is dry, it will start to take on water.
Okay after considerable research and several horror stories :loony: I've found a solution. The answer to my own question is 'yes'; water can get into the intake via the cone filter and cause considerable damage. The solution is a dry charger or some call it the rain sock. The most populer is the Wimmer Customer Cycles Rain Sock. Wimmer Custom Cycle intake assemblies can be found at several internet retailers and I'm sure Nelson can get his hands on them too.Preparing for a 1200 mile ride...has anyone expereinced issues when riding in the rain with the spike filter? I took water in one time, but it was f-ing hurricane like weather in Michigan. Bike still performed but did stumble a few times. Both Doug G and I have the D&M one mounted vertical and other horizontal. WE got caught in heavy a down poor. Both of us never had a problem. It rained so hard we had to pull over because you could not see. We have also rode hundreds of miles in lite rain never any trouble. Are filters are oiled.
