I have a Wimmer open cone style filter on my K9. I have been caught in mother fucker downpours and my engine nearly shits the bed. I did buy what Wimmer calles a "pre-filter/dust cover/rain sock" for my filter set up. I now keep it under the seat just in case.
So, to answer your question, My K9 will not run in heavy downpours. Perhaps guys with the "Spike" air filter have enough metal covering the filter element and sporting K&N oiled filter elements, as mine does not. That in and of itself might help keep enough of the water out during fucker rain storms. The filter I have with my Wimmer set up is not a K&N filter element and does not get oiled. You clean it with soap and water, let it dry and your good. It is a woven cotton filter element similar to K&N's but not oiled.
