Yes this is most likely the problem,, take a Q-tip and clean it out, should be good to go.Yeah, the little sensor at 8:30 on your speedo cover is the sensor just like in your newer vehicles. Make sure it's clear and not filled with wax or polish.

That sensor is in the tach ring not the speedo so if the speedo is working correctly then great. You may have to pull it apart and make sure the tach ring is clean and check all the connection. Anyother parts of the tach ring not work?did not get it fixed don't wont bike down for a weak or two or more waiting for a new speedo to come from big dog still riding

Great instructions in the service manual. It's easy, two bolts under the bucket then remove the wires and remove the third screw. Many threads here on this subject!is it hard to get to the sensor and replace it
