I was told if the battery drops below a certain voltage....the speedo won't work....mine froze up on me a few times....when it was 36 degree's out ....but after a couple of miles......it started to work again.....thats one of the reasons I went to a 310CCA Interstate Battery..:whoop:

Yeah.....Ohmster said something about if the battery gets a weak cell...or if its just getting weak...which drops the voltage...the speedo won't work....but after you ride it....it get freshend up and then works again....I noticed this on my scoot the 4 times I rode it when it was cold out side....like mid 30's

yeah I'm not sure thats my problem though - I always got the tender on it and as soon as I get going and see it aint working I switch off (after a couple of yards) switch on again and its fine - can happen on hot and cold days - sorry Steel - I'm not trying to hijack your thread here but it must be all related

it did...plus I always put it on the tender too.....it has done it about 3- 4 times when I rode in the colder weather.....I would go a few miles down the road.....shut the bike off...then start it up again and then my speedo would work fine.....I mention this to Ohmster and he said my battery was probably starting to get weak....and then he suggested the bigger CCA battery like the Interstate or HD one....I went with Interstate like Jake has because my Dealer is also a Interstate dealer too...

i'll keep an eye on her and see what happens. might bump her up to the interstate down the road. never thought it would of been the battery though. if it has enough juice to crank that big ass motor you'd think it would have enough to run the speedo.:bang:

did it fix the problem Dave?
I will let you know when I get my scoot back in a few weeks.....
Thats what I thought too Steel...never had a problem cranking that motor....but I heard if the voltage drops a little...sometimes that is enough to make the speedo quit for a few miles....actually...if you pm Ohmster....he can explain it alot better than I can.....

you guys rock! been kind of reluctant to ask questions in the past for fear of asking a stupid fucken question. i feel a little better knowing the problem wasn't the obvious. thanx again:up:

Lee, I had the same issue as you and after it happening a few times, I think I figured something out. When you go to crank it, wait for the needle to zero back out for a couple of seconds then hit run and then start. I haven't had it happen since I've been using that method. Maybe or maybe not but it doesn't hurt anything and seems to have worked for me.

I have noticed that when I let the speedometer needle come back to zero, everything works OK; but if I do not wait I will be stopping shortly to cycle the power to get the speedo to work.

Also, check your battery connections. If the battery connections are not tight, the speedo and tach will not work correctly.

The speedo is VERY touchy. I was having problems with my speedo when it started cooling off in AZ. I put my battery on a battery tender on the advice of a member. ALL speedo problems went away.
Yesterday it was pretty cold here in the am abt 40 degrees. I was going for a ride with some friends and put the bike outside to clean it and when I went to leave the speedo didn't work. The bike was outside for about 1 hour while I cleaned it and it had been on a battery tender the night before. The speedo was fine the rest of the day and it never got over 50. This is the only time my speedo hasn't worked after being on the tender

There are no stupid questions... a few newbie questions but nothing bad.

Yes, sounds like your weak battery was the culprit.

If you're not on the bike, the tender should be

When you get on the bike; when you turn the key on... let the speedo and ehc "boot up" then hit the run, twist twist the throttle, then start it. This will help some.

Further, BDM is coming out with a EHC software update to help with this. It should be known at the dealerships. This only applies to the USB (not the older serial port (round thing)). They download it in there and everytime you hit the run button it cycles or resets the power to the speedo. It is suppose to fix all of these problems.

You have to give it to BDM. Those boys and girls over there have been putting in alot of work to fix their speedo problems. It has been a big thorn in both their and our sides. Personally my hats are off to them for doing more and more research to fix it.
