Shredded Belt & Pully

This just hasn't been my month for luck with the dog. I got about 20 miles from home yesterday, looked down at my belt, and noticed it was shredded with two groves or ruts worn into it. The belt is only about 10 months old and had absolutely no wear on it prior to this ride. See the pic below. When I follow the belt up to the from pully, I can see about a 1/4 inch grove worn into the damn thing. That was replaced with the belt. When feeling the belt, I can tell that it was much looser than it should've been.
So, my question is what else should I look at when replacing the belt and from pully? Is there anything I should be aware of that could have caused this to happen besides the loose belt.
Also, seems strange that the belt ware is on the outside and the teeth on the belt where it comes into contact with the chipped pully are fine:confused:

Thanks all

Could of picked up a rock or other road debris that caused this. I would remove the pulley cover and belt guard and take a look at it for any damage/ the cause as well.

If quality belts and pulleys are in good condition and tension is right, they will go nearly "forever" (unless of course rocks or other objects come in contact with them).

You say the teeth on the belt are OK, but the damage is on the outside. Well it has to have been rubbing on SOMETHING. And show us a pic of the pulley damage? A rock could have damaged the pulley (chipped it) and then came out but should have marked the belt on the inside somewhere (and the rest of the belt teeth still maybe look OK). Something like a rock in the pulley teeth might have stretched the belt or pushed it out long enough to rub the outside of the belt and do damage to it.

How many miles on the bike and why did they replace the belt and what else did they do?

Hard to tell from that picture but that sure looks like aluminum metal shavings. I would be pulling the primary and looking into that.

Got about 6500 miles on it since the replacement 10 months ago. That makes about 8K total. I only had it replaced because of the constant chirp. That was before I found out about the Teflon coated pully on 05 and up.
The dealer replaced both and did the alignment for me.
I've got no experience dealing with the this part of the bike but I should be able to get it apart and put up a pic of the pully.

I'd venture to say a bolt has backed out inside your pulley cover and your belt is riding on it. I would verify it's not rubbing on the swing arm or anything else first. If it was super loose it could have been. The belts tend to stretch quite a bit in the first 2000. If it was to loose to start with....

He has an 04 so there is no pulley cover. He would have to pull the primary to get to the transmission on the LSD models. Kind of a pain.

Well I have a 04 and when I look at the possible cause I can only think something got caught between the backside of the shifter arm and the belt. Check for any scratches in the aluminum shift arm to indicate that.

If I drain the primary and take off that outside cover, should i be able to see the pully? Service manual is not much help here.

No, it will be behind the inner primary and that means removing the primary chain and clutch unit then pulling the inner primary. That's why I stated above that it's a pain with the LSD units. But from underneath with a flashlight you should be able to look up under there and see what kind of damage you may have. A lift would make this a lot easier.

here's what I can see from underneath. Looks like that pulley is shot.
Once I get the new parts and and start with the repair, I may have to ask a few more questions.
Thanks for all the help today.

Well you need to get back there regardless so get out the wrenches... and the wenches cause waykool put it perfectly!

Oh yeah swingarm needs to come off as well. If it were me I would put the 30 tooth pulley on there and go with a shorter belt while it needs replaced. May as well replace the swingarm bushings/bearings while your at it. Money, money, money.

I've got the outer primary cover off but am not sure on the clutch. Do I need to take all 4 bolts off or just the one in the center?
I assume the front compensator is just the 1 1/2 nut that needs to be backed off. I'm sure these are basic questions but this is all new to me.

I wish I had more money.
Funny you mention that 1.5 nut on the comp. Mine just backed off. I was riding and thought the bottom end was coming loose. Went to the trusty dealer right away and guy said that it sounded like the altenator houseing was busted. Took of the primary and just the loose nut. pfew. Now just need to get it back together and ride.
